There are now Three R42 E Trains, also no R46's was on the E today. |

Posted by R33/R36 mainline on Wed Aug 13 19:02:16 2008 There are now three sets of R42's running on the E line. Looks like an extra set got transfered this past week.Also there was NO R46 E trains today, only R32's and R42's. I guess the MTA put the 46's on the E line for a few days so that E line riders would stop bitching about the A/C on the 32's.... Anyways i rode the 42 E it was fun, but the car i was riding in had two cut out doors... Other than that it was an fun ride on the R42 E train. And few pics from today.....  The good ol days....  |

I rode the E end to end on Monday and I think I counted at least 6 R46 E's vs like 4 R32's. One point 3 R46's ran one after the other. 2 R46 E's were at the WTC station. |

That happened to me at Jamaica Yard doing a put-in for E service. They gave me an R-32 consist will all F signs. That's 60 signs that have to be changed. And no C/R to help. I guess that happened to you too.I've also had a few put-ins at ENY on a Monday afternoon that were left over from weekend GO's, and all signs needed to be changed. |

The air conditioning situation on the E is a bit better than the debacle with whole trains turning into rolling saunas, but still on each of 4 R32 E trains I encountered today there was at least one car with no air conditioning and/or no air circulated by the duct blower. |

Strange how the R42 in the bottom photo has the 'bullseye' end route sign common to the R44s, which were still new in 1974. At that time, the 42s still had the end 'tablet' sign in 1967-79 colors with the large white route letter on it.It was sometime around 1977-'78 that these were replaced with colored bullets, which have prevailed on Mod 40s and 42s to this day. This may or may not have been coincidental with the interiors' change from aqua to beige walls and orange door panels. The last time I can recall riding an R42 with the all-aqua interior was on the D in January '79. By then this was rare enough to look strangely retro. |
