Strange how the R42 in the bottom photo has the 'bullseye' end route sign common to the R44s, which were still new in 1974. At that time, the 42s still had the end 'tablet' sign in 1967-79 colors with the large white route letter on it.It was sometime around 1977-'78 that these were replaced with colored bullets, which have prevailed on Mod 40s and 42s to this day. This may or may not have been coincidental with the interiors' change from aqua to beige walls and orange door panels. The last time I can recall riding an R42 with the all-aqua interior was on the D in January '79. By then this was rare enough to look strangely retro. |
