Brooklyn IRT anniversry - NY Times articles |
|
Posted by Allan on Fri May 2 09:38:50 2008 Since the annioversary went by with barely a whimper I figured that it might be worthwhile to look at the NY Times articles from May 1 - 4, 1908.Viewing the artciles is free. When you get to each page click on "View full article" and that portion of the newpaper page should come up. May 1, 1908 http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E0DE5DA1639E333A25752C0A9639C946997D6CF&scp=4&sq=brooklyn+subway&st=p May 2, 1908 http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9D02E0DD1631E233A25751C0A9639C946997D6CF&scp=2&sq=brooklyn+subway&st=p May 3, 1908 http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9801E6DC1631E233A25750C0A9639C946997D6CF&scp=1&sq=brooklyn+subway&st=p In the May 3rd article they mentioned talk of an extention to connect to the BRT Brighton line and actually running down to Coney Island. We know, of course, that never came to pass. May 4, 1908 Did you know that a train derailed in the tube at 8 PM on May 3, 1908? I certainly didn't http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E01E7DB143EE233A25757C0A9639C946997D6CF&scp=1&sq=brooklyn+subway&st=p The articles can be saved as Adobe .pdf files If you can't get to the articles, send me an email and I can send you the .pdf files |

I saw the photos and they looked great but one would have thought that the TOMC would have done a ceremonial run from Bowling Green to Atlantic Avenue and not run up the 7th Avenue line.Someone at the MTA was playing games and I assure you it I don't appreciate that. Obviously that person(s) have no sense of history. BTW - there was not a single mention in any newspaper. That was why I posted the links to the NY Times 1908 articles. |

I stand corrected (Re: Brooklyn IRT anniversry - NY Times articles) |

Posted by Allan on Fri May 2 10:47:31 2008, in response to Re: Brooklyn IRT anniversry - NY Times articles, posted by Allan on Fri May 2 10:42:18 2008. So the only article was in AMNY. It is nice to know someone cared.I also stand corrected in that there was a ceremonial train from Grand Central to Atlantic Av which then run up the 7th Av line to 96th St. But the question remains - how come the MTA didn't play this up like they did with the 100th Anniversary of the IND? IRT service to Brooklyn was a pivotal point in subway history (subway - not elevated history). |

Fred, you're welcome. What surprised me is that the NYT had the articles for free. Usually they want a fee for items that old. A big thank you to the NY Times for that. |

I am sure but after what was admitted in those AMNY articles (in another posting) about how much money is generated by NYC Subway memorabilia collectors (for items which would most likely otherwise wind up as scrap) you would think we would be treated with a bit more respect. |

Isn't the INternet great? Years ago if we wanted this article we would have to go to the NY Public library, look in the "Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature" and then go to a library branch that had that dates paper on microfilm and even then that branch might not have a microfilm reader with a working printer. One thing - remember to repost this on August 1, 2008 (ro August 2) when the 100th Anniversary of this event comes along. |

In this case I was responding to the comments thet the TM did not publicize this trip so that railfans would not know about it. If true then yes - we are unwanted :-(Seriously I have other issues with them that go far deeper and a lot more personal than this though... |
