100 years of IRT subway service to Brooklyn (plus)

Although the 100th Annivesary of service between Bowling Green and Borough Hall was back on January 9, 2008, I saw a sign in the Transit Musume today that indicates that the Train of Many Colors will be used to commemorate the extension from Borough Hall to Atlantic Avenue on May 1, 2008.

Exactly what they will do was not indicated. If anyone has any idea, please sound off.

As a side note: August 1, 2008 is the 100th Annivesary of the extension of Broadway (today's #1) service from 225th St to 242nd St-Van Cortlandt Park.

September 16, 2008 marks the 100th Annivesary the start of BRT/BMT service into Manhattan. That is when the Jamaica El (Eastern Division) was extended from Marcy Avenue, over the Williamsburg Bridge to Essex Street.

If only the D-Types or Standards could be resurrected for that.

I imagine that with a large private cash infusion and qualified personnel willing to work OT or for free, it could be done.

What parts? They should get someone to make them. Those are relatively simple parts, and a blacksmith would be able to provide some parts. Resistor grids are no big deal. you can rewind motors, brushes are easy to get, compressors can be rebuilt. What parts, exactly?

I don't really know but I have a feeling that some of the cars are inoperable for lack of replacement parts and getting (or making) them isn't a priorty. As long as the cars in the TOMC are operable they will be the ones used.

Are sme rs from he arnies interchangeable with the Low-Vs? Considering the Low-Vs are much older I would think not.

I have a feeling that if the MTA does something for the BRT/BMT anniversary in September they will use the R1/9 set instead of the standards or D-types)

That's my suspicion too, at least that the service was running in the 1890s, but now I'm unsure whether that was BRT/BMT, although I'm fairly certain that even if not, then it was one of the predecessor railroads.

You are correct - HOWEVER - that was elevated service.

Essex Street was the first BRT/BMT subway station in Manhattan. I should have been a bit more specific in my posting.

Does it really count as a subway? The service terminating there was elevated as well. I'd consider the opening of the line to Canal St. as the first real "subway" for the BRT.

The BRT station on the Manhattan end was actually called Delancey Street when the line opened. According to The Tracks of New York, it was a terminal with three tracks and two island platforms. I don't know when the name was changed to Essex Street.

I've been looking for a picture of this Delancey Street station for a long time but have never seen one.

The lack of original BMT equipment like the standards and the D's is a real bummer indeed. It's a shame they got into the shape they did. It's been so long that they went out on a fan trip..... Of course they can always be towed by the steeple cab. But there's nothing like hearing their own motors and compressors.

It was only IN SERVICE to 96 St as a 2. It did continue north.

Good stuff! I was so glad to catch it at the Union Sq downtown platform purely by chance. BTW, in your second photo, do you know if the route of "(5) Brooklyn via Lex. Av. | (2) The Bronx via 7 Av." was ever used on the rollsigns? I noticed it when it was being resigned as a 2 on the way to 96th, but don't recall seeing it when they ran in revenue.

I too thought it was cancelled. However, I got a text message early this morning stating that it was moving around 207 St Yard. I knew then that it was going to run. Unofrtunately, I was unable to make it.
Nice pics Brian.
