Los Angeles Metrolink purchases 15 new "green" locomotives |

Posted by Easy on Tue Apr 22 22:07:29 2008 More powerful and less emissions. About half are going to Orange County where they'll be tripling the current service level. In the next few years Orange County will be increasing to 30 minute headways all day long.

Isn't the service level on the San Bernardino line comparable to many of the levels on LIRR, MNRR, Metra, etc.? It's every 20 minutes at rush hour. |

It indeed runs every 20 minutes from 4:20 to 6:00, but it returns to hourly service after 6:00. And the service is terrible on weekends -- at least most LIRR lines generally run every half hour on weekends. |

The routes to Babylon and Port Jefferson offer the full 2 tph (Due to track work, the stations closest to Babylon receive 1 tph, but that's due to track work and not intention). The route to Huntington is also 2 tph, but alternating trains skip stops such that some stations only see 1 tph. The other routes are run at 1 tph (including Patchogue) except for the following, which see less service: West Hempstead: 1t/ 2h Oyster Bay: 1t/ 2h most of the day but sometimes approaching 2 tph Greenport: 2 t/ DAY Speonk/Montauk: variable but something like 2t/ 3h depending (service is increased seasonally for the summer) |

Let's see what happens when the EPA Tier III regs for emissions are eventually finalized.Probably getting more sulfur out of the diesel fuel is the thing that maybe has resulted in the largest reductions in emissions of the really noxious stuff. And that ALP46 isn't green, you know. Kind of grayish actually, with that multicolored stripe. :) But kidding aside, since electric power can be supplied in ways other than the burning of hydrocarbons, the ALP46 tends to be 'greener', yes. |
