More powerful and less emissions. About half are going to Orange County where they'll be tripling the current service level. In the next few years Orange County will be increasing to 30 minute headways all day long.

Metrolink debuts its first 'green' locomotive

The train is one of 15 that will be integrated into the fleet; OC system to see seven of those trains.

THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Metrolink unveiled on Tuesday its first "green" locomotive, one of 15 that will eventually be incorporated into the system's commuter-train fleet.

"This is sort of the train-version of a hybrid car that shuts itself off when it's not moving," said Metrolink spokeswoman Denise Tyrrell. "The number one thing for us that we feel will be a major, major component is that this locomotive can pull 10 cars."

Ten-feet longer than current Metrolink locomotives, the new energy-efficient locomotive will carry 1,200 more passengers and have the ability to pull 10 cars. Currently, a Metrolink train can pull about six cars.

Metrolink unveiled the new, two-story locomotive Tuesday, which is currently sitting at Taylor Yard in Los Angeles. Metrolink purchased a set of 15 at $1.9 million each.

The new train boasts low-emissions, emitting about 42 percent less nitrogen oxides and 70 percent less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. An automatic engine stop-start technology built into the train also reduces idling emissions, Tyrrell said.

The Orange County Transportation Authority purchased seven of the 15 locomotives for $21 million total, which includes a fee for spare parts and other costs, said Joel Zlotnik, an OCTA spokesman.

The new trains will be staggered into the system as they are delivered over the next 15 months. OCTA will integrate all of the new locomotives by 2010 as part of the agency's plan to expand Metrolink service. Older locomotives will be pulled from service and revamped to clean standards.

Orange County's Metrolink network includes 11 stations, with plans to build another one in Placentia.

Good to see the upgrades in service coming along there.

Which model of the MPXpress did Metrolink end up ordering - the MP40?

Uh-oh. If NJT can find a 14' 6"-tall one that acts as a de-facto dual-mode when not in motion, they might have found their Holey Grale when it comes to the elusive one-seat ride to Manhattan without building a new full-size rale terminal . . . (yeah right)

I heard this on KNX.

I haven't been paying much photographic attention to Metrolink lately... perhaps it's because of the terrible service. Perhaps I'll take some Metrolink photos later this week.

Isn't the service level on the San Bernardino line comparable to many of the levels on LIRR, MNRR, Metra, etc.? It's every 20 minutes at rush hour.

It indeed runs every 20 minutes from 4:20 to 6:00, but it returns to hourly service after 6:00. And the service is terrible on weekends -- at least most LIRR lines generally run every half hour on weekends.

From railpictures.net:

Looks rather bland, although I like the black paint around the top. I guess that's to hide all the diesel residue.

I assume the Metrolink logo will be applied to the left of the "METROLINK" text, given the space.

That'd make relatively little sense because Metrolink has had nothing but 710 equipped units, other than the few F40PHs they never actually operated.

I never cease to be amazed by how much stretching PR people will do to claim something is green. I know I should be glad they're not going to let the damn thing idle in a yard for 8 hours, but still, this isn't exactly green:

The electricity has to come from somewhere. If it's nuclear sourced or hydro or wind/solar sourced, it's green. If it's coal or oil sourced, it's not.

Well, not on most routes, actually.

The routes to Babylon and Port Jefferson offer the full 2 tph (Due to track work, the stations closest to Babylon receive 1 tph, but that's due to track work and not intention).

The route to Huntington is also 2 tph, but alternating trains skip stops such that some stations only see 1 tph.

The other routes are run at 1 tph (including Patchogue) except for the following, which see less service:

West Hempstead: 1t/ 2h

Oyster Bay: 1t/ 2h most of the day but sometimes approaching 2 tph

Greenport: 2 t/ DAY

Speonk/Montauk: variable but something like 2t/ 3h depending (service is increased seasonally for the summer)

Let's see what happens when the EPA Tier III regs for emissions are eventually finalized.

Probably getting more sulfur out of the diesel fuel is the thing that maybe has resulted in the largest reductions in emissions of the really noxious stuff.

And that ALP46 isn't green, you know. Kind of grayish actually, with that multicolored stripe. :)

But kidding aside, since electric power can be supplied in ways other than the burning of hydrocarbons, the ALP46 tends to be 'greener', yes.

Yup, and the German ones are red, when they don't have an advertising wrap on 'em. (This train would be a "high-speed train" per US definition, since it runs at at top speed of 137 mph.)
