Low ridership or not, it needs to be fixed up. If let go any further, some of the decay could become even a safety hazard! If they are going to keep it open, they can't let it deteriorate further, fix up or close! And I don't think close is an option, so.... |

That's a defensible position, though I figure since they're doing structural work, they say let's do the station rehab too. But I'll agree with your point that they don't need full windscreen/shelters. |

Well, to add, it's the lowest use REAL station in the system. Aqueduct is the actual lowest, but it's only open when there are races at the racetrack....By the way, Baach 105th Seaside is the lowest in the system, but also Queens. -St Mary's on the Pelham is the lowest use station in the Bronx -Atlantic Ave on the L is the lowest use station in Brooklyn -and Bowery is the lowest use station in Manhattan. (disclaimer, this is as of 2004, the last year I have stats for, but I assume that is still the case). |

Even though it's the lowest use, it's still 82,000 fares collected at that station. If all the others on the line are going to be done, there's no reason not to do that one. It can't be left to completely fall off the viaduct. |

But they aren't shutting it down, and really, there's no reason to shut it down. If they did, than the 2nd lowest station would be the "lowest use station", and then what? Not repair that one either? Shut that one down? Then what happens, the third lowest station is the least used. WHat should they do then? Not repair it? Shut it down?....and so forth.... |

For a station that gets only gets 82,000 riders a year. I'm saying why keep it open and why not just have the other stations closest to it like 98th and 116th pick up the slack from 105th. I only said one station. I never said anything about closing other stations. The next station would've been Broad Channel that would've been the lowest used. |

I have a chart showing the individual stations from a fare evasion survey in 1991. The number of unpaid fares can be somewhat subjective depending on who's doing the counting. But I've always considered the number of paid fares to have been accurate. And the majority of figures probably haven't changed much in the last 16 years. |

But David was 100% correct and Ron is 100% wrong. If there is an existing frequent bus to the location that cuts out significant walking, then that IS a practical way to get there, even if buses DO SUCK. I ride a bus every morning and every evening to and from the subway. It is VERY practical. But it sucks immensely. |

Because the minimum needed to make it safe could mean leaving crappy, paint peeling windscreens up and leaving up a roof with holes in it. The people who use that station do not deserve that. They deserve the roof to be patched and they deserve a station of nice appearance. They don't need fancy stained glass installations and mosaics and all that stuff. Just put up the cheapest materials in the catalog of acceptable materials. |

The Wood in the walls is rotting, the roof has holes in it, and the place is falling apart. It hasn't been maintained properly for decades because it's low use, you have to draw the line somewhere when it gets to fall in complete shambles, low use or not.82,000 people still use that station, and you can't have a station where the walls are falling apart and the ceiling caving in. |

I think the proper route would be to replace essential items with decent quality, but to eliminate non-essential items. E.g., a full length windscreen and roof can be cut back to a length of a little less than 300', and things like that. |

I wonder why the Rockaways only have one bus route that travels along it all the way from the Rockaway Park area to the Far Rockaway area, unless the Q22 doesn't get that much ridership or another service isn't needed. I wonder how a Beach Channel Drive bus would do out there. Most trips begin or end at Beach 116th Street. There aren't many Q22 boardings west of Beach 116th Street, and the peninsula west of Cross Bay Boulevard is also served by the Q21, Q35, and Q53. There isn't a need for another cross-peninsula route. See the NYCDOT Bus Ridership Survey and Route Analysis Appendix B: Route Profiles, pages 158-159. |
