Conflicting reports, aboard this M train that hit the bumper. WNYC report had this occuring at 10:55. 880 WCBS Reporter Rich Lamb is in the station, and he says it's not as bad as originally reported. Driver did hit the bumper, and he's requesting medical aid, no one else reported hurt.- KarmaConditionedCar A Cannibal in a former life. |

From WCBS Newsradio 88 website:"New York City transit officials say a subway train has hit a bumper block at a downtown Manhattan station. The M train, headed from Brooklyn, struck the block at the end of the line at the Chambers Street station. "Fire Battalion Chief Robert Norcross says there were no passengers aboard the train. He says the motorman was slightly injured. "Norcross said it appeared least one car of the train may have gone off the tracks about 75 feet from the station. Authorities at the scene said power was shut off so the problem could be fixed. "NYC Transit spokesman Charles Seaton said the accident happened at about 10:55 a.m. Tuesday." Thank goodness no serious injuries. |

Isn't the bumper block further down the line than 75 feet? That would mean that one of the other cars may have derailed on the S curve. In any case, thankfully the injuries weren't severe and the damage not as bad as originally feared. When I first heard of the incident, I thought there might have been a structural problem down there, with the station in such a decrepit condition.Moe - watch where you go!!! -w- |

I wonder if any work was done on that tail track since it began being used regularly back in the mid-90's. Until then, it (as well as both center tracks at Chambers) got precious little use for more than 2 decades. I recall them in the mid 80's with rusted rails. |

I don't think there's room at Broad St. for both lines. They might as well send the M to Brooklyn when it's not a shuttle. Wait, that makes sense and it's what the riding public would want. They'll make the M into a shuttle full-time. |

Same up here, especially with too many "knockdowns and fatalities" within the same depot. The General Manager gets on the depot manager, who gets on the General Superintendent, and AGS, who gets on the Road Superintendents, who gets on the dispatchers (somewhat) and the drivers. They have gave 30+ drivers days in the streets at the same time.A newbie B/O they will get on the Instructors, and the 19-A dispatchers who gave the newbie operator rides. |

Thanks for the input, guys... My point being that an "experienced" T/O would know the distance beyond the platform where the bumper sits and would know AT WHAT SPEED to approach... barring any unforseen BRAKING DIFFICULTIES with the consist in question, it almost sounds like the T/O was either going too fast, or lacked adequate braking maneuvers. (unless s/he downright mistook the track it was on and assumed those tracks continued out on to Brooklyn) (and since it's OUTSIDE the station, then I imagine the bumper sits in the tunnel itself). Sorry to hear about this incident, regardless. |

FWIW, it's one thing to bump into the bumper at Wakefield (IN BROAD DAYLIGHT) and a whole 'nother to bump into a bumper in a dark tunnel (espc. if you're inexperienced or unfamiliar with that particular territory). |

Sure does suggest brake failure ... on my last day with the teeyay, I had several call-ons which I stopped for, did my business and then proceeded at yard speed. The last stop in front of the train ahead of me didn't happen when I pulled that last service, threw the handle, let go of the controller and reached for the cord. By the time it finally dumped, too late.Hope the person in the cab is OK and sorry to hear they got banged up enough to go to the hospital. Given MY wreck, what isaw in that photo wasn't as bad as the one I was in, though it looks like a fairly similar end result. :( |

Nah, just a mean ol' Bumper Block. They can do up a train pretty good. Case in pernt: R46 #1054 (179th St) - AND #941 which was right behind it. #1054 was smushed for a distance of about 8 feet (just behind the first door) and #941 stopped with such force that it was buckled in the car centre. Case #2 in pernt: R44 #288 (205th St) had its entire forward end swallowed up by the tunnel end, with #285 following right behind. And there's always the best plough-job of all time: MOORGATE. wayne |

If the MTA doesn't want to use the relay track any more, it can always have the Ms terminate and reverse ends in the station and advise passengers changing from Jamaica bound J trains to make their transfer at Canal St. When I was breaking in as a C/R, that was done on a J train I was working. The J was brought into J-4 Chambers St and went right back to Jamaica from there. |
