I'm beginning to think that Americans' standards for hotels are different tfrom everyone else's. Just yesterday I was booking a hotel, via the Internet, for a future visit to Budapest. The one we chose had reviews posted by many customres - many of the reviews from Americans were unfavourable, all the ones from non-Americans were very favourable. Since we're not Americans, we booked it. |

I tried and tried and tried nightly to give them hints that their travel agents took them for a ride(showed them photos of the hotel that wasn't the hotel, promised amenities that didn't even exist), they were never happy. No one else really ever complained. Everything has to be all upperclass. But to their credit, the place was horrible. ALL Hotels are shitboxes, and if they aren't they will be. That's how hotels work. When they become old and shitty, another company buys the property, remodels, and now it's new and beutiful again for a few years before neglect makes it sold to someone else who does it again. To tear a place down, is a new one to me. |

Even apart from any architectural value, the bigger loss is of another hotel-- so many have been lost or converted to condos that NYC has trouble competing for conventions. Vegas, Orlando and Atlanta all have more available hotel rooms than NYC and we lose a lot of good business because of it. |

My boys loved it, the whole Sci-Fi routine with folks in costumes. The high-priced auctions of Sci-Fi stuff were always a joy. The trips out to the Meadowlands is just not the same. Both of you are exactly right. The place is still in use so it can't be too far gone.They've been trying to gut and renovate what was the tallest Hotel in Florida 80 years ago. Still see no work. Other buildings were too far gone, so was demolished. :( They don't make them like they used to. Cheaper to start over usually as far as I know.

I just went out at lunchtime and took these  By the way, the inside of the hotel was crowded with no signs of the impending closure. I also did some looking around for any remnants of the 33rd St. Passageway. If you go to the Manhattan Mall lower level and through the food court towards 7th Ave., there is an Exit door. Go through that door (it is really an exit so you are not trespassing) make a right and another right. You will see a door that says Subway - Employees Only. I bet that leads to the passageway. It was locked. Perhaps when and if they do level the Hotel Pennsylvania to below street level, they may uncover some of the passageway. |

It was designed by the firm of McKim, Mead & White...I'd like to hear the Landmarks Commission's explanation why there are buildings in New York designed by McKim, Meade & White that are not landmarked. The developers should be ashamed of themselves. They can preserve the facade, and noticable architectuarl features of the interior, while constructing a 60 story building on the site. Costs money to do that? The city could provide tax abatements to defray the costs to do so. |

A couple of weeks ago I was in the 6th Ave./34th St. PATH/Subway station looking for the entrance to the passageway from that end. The door that I suspect leads to the passageway was unlocked and open but unfortunately the workers who were entering and leaving wouldn't allow me to go inside and take pictures (I tried asking nicely!)The passageway interests me because I used to use it from 1970-1978 when I worked near Madison Square Park and walked to Penn Station. I could swear that I used to exit the passageway on 32nd St. not 33rd St. (just to the east of where Sbarro's is now). Perhaps I used a different corridor to exit. |
