Posted by Newkirk Plaza David on Mon Aug 27 00:21:09 2007 Farmingdale station, Eastbound train:No cheese buses running, LIB Series 400, Orion 5 #400 working the LIRR shuttle to Mineola. The 19th century Farmingdale stationhouse: Then I drove around (used my car today) and tried to find a road where the train would relay from westbound Central to eastbound Ronkonkoma, no luck. So I settled on a nearby grade crossing.: The westbound train is next: Finally I drove to Roslyn Road area for these exclusive photos: Hope you enjoyed them. David |

Cool shots at the grade crossing.Last time I was out that way I noticed the Farmingdale stationhouse. Looks like it's probably one of the best examples of a 19th Century stationhouse on that branch, would you say? |

After seeing bland houses like Patchogue (1963) and Merillion Ave (1950's), Farmingdale is the last of a dying breed of Gothic stationhouses and is among the best on the entire LIRR. Greenport is nice too. |

Let me clarify that. I was on that trainset for the roundtrip, so at that point, 508 was the east (push) engine and I was on that train as it was traveling west. |

Farmingdale was my home town from 1963 untill I went off to Oxford UK. Rode the Ronkonkoma to NYU and back from 1972 to 1980. The station dates 1841. It was single track. I think the north track was laid in 1918. In 1991 the town gave it a 150 yr party. I have the momento form that event right next to me here. It's a wooden train whistle you blow into. Steam loco sound. It's labeled " Long Island Railroad Farmingdale Station, 1841 - 1991".That tall structure on the station house used to house the dynamos for the Huntington Co (forgot the exact anme) trolly that ran from there out conklin St to Rt 110. I believe up to huntington and also down to amityville. The grade crossing with the curve is Meritt Rd. Just behind that curve is "B"Tower and interlocking. It's where the Central Branch (ex Stewart Central RR of LI) merges to the Main. There is no good (ie legal) acess to shot picts from there AFAIR. |

That tall structure on the station house used to house the dynamos for the Huntington Co (forgot the exact name) trolley that ran from there out Conklin St to Rt 110. I believe up to Huntington and also down to Amityville.I was told by a retired LIRR friend of mine years ago that the 600 volt equipment may still be there. I've never been up there to see so I can say for sure. When the Farmingdale station was restored years ago, the old ceramic cone shaped insulators that were protruding from the building were removed. Also the protruding remnants of the steel structure that carried the 600 volt cables over the tracks were ground down and sealed over. Today you can't see these reminders of the traction past. The station's stainless steel roof shingles were replicated and restored as new. I now live a block from the station. Bill "Newkirk" |

Yes, I remmeber those cones. And I was going to speculate too about the remaining equipment up there. Silly me, durring the course of my use of that station, 1972 - 80. I befriended the station lady. She was, in fact, a friend of my mom and dad, and my cousin - Gaylord's Beauty Salon on Main St. - cut her hair. She'd have let me up into that loft if I'd just asked! You live there now, cool! I come up occasionally to look into Dad's (he's gone now) house which is rented out. We should hook up some time and rail fan. drop me an e-line. PS, Love your callanders. I have this year's right here in my office. Love the teal R10! |
