Apparently, it doesn't apply at Boston South Station either, but two asshole MBTA rent-a-cops refused to accept that I'd made a simple mistake of jurisdiction and proceded to violate the fourth amendment and ask for my name, social security number, and mother's maiden name! Heh, I would have assumed they were identity thieves immediately if they weren't in uniform, and even then, I tracked them down and demanded ID from them to prove they were really cops. Of course, they also asked me what country my great-grandparents were from, why I said I was here in the US in February when I had a museum ticket proving I was in Europe in July, why I hadn't inexplicably mentioned the bullet train in Japan when I said I was a railfan, where my passport was currently located, and who won the world series in 1959. (I didn't know where all of my various great grandparents came from until I asked out of curiousity while describing this encounter later, they may have been confused by a ticked from a French museum dated 2/07/06 or July 2nd by European conventions but February 7th by American, I hadn't mentioned the bullet train because it would have been wildly out of context, my passport was at home because I was in Boston, not Paris, and I made the last one up. If they'd really asked me, I would have said: "Not the Red Sox.") |

Amtrak doesn't seem to have that same policy in LA. They make announcements that only ticketed passengers are allowed on the trains, but I've never heard anything about the platform.Amtrak can be a little funny. They don't seem to care about photographers at Union Station in LA. I've seen several photographers on the same platform before. What they do seem to care about is people being on the platform before they actually announce the track. I've never seen them tell anyone to leave, but I get the definite impression that they don't want us passengers up there. |

Well that is the official policy of Amtrak, as told to me by the Amtrak spokesman. Only ticketed passengers are allowed on the platform, and if you are allowed on the platform because you have a ticket for that train that is boarding, you are allowed to take photos. You can also take photo on board and as you detrain. If Amtrak chooses not to enforce that policy in certain places, that's great. But the policy is in place, so if they tell you to get off the platform because you don't have a ticket for that train, then they are following policy. |

Has it always been like that or was that a response to 9/11?Our tracks are still like the way that airports used to be. Remember when you could wait with someone right at an airport gate before their flight? Give them a kiss and a wave as they walked down the jetway? Or meet them right at the gate when they got off the plane? That didn't really stop for good at all airports until 9/11. |

And that's because NJT and/or LIRR use the same platforms! So they can't restrict access to the platforms. Also, I believe that if you read the rules of conduct posted around Penn Station, there is no mention of photography. So I really don't know how Amtrak's photo policy would come into play there. |

Metrolink and amtrak can share the same platforms as well. I guess that might explain it for us as well. But they usually don't so maybe not.The only time that I specifically asked an amtrak employee if I could take pictures his response was "sure, what do I care?" I was assuming that was their official policy. ;) |

OK, if I were living in that police controlled state then I would do what it takes to photograph what I'd like to have photos of, yes I'd take the chance BUT that's ME !!!!!I wouldn't expect anyone else to do this but in my mind I would, call it what what you want but laws are meant to be broken...so goes an old saying, IF there were anti photography laws out here then I definitely do what I had to to get the photos I wanted. I'm posting from a public computer in the court while waiting to be called. I can only get computer access for 20 minutes at a time, and the last computer I was on had a bad keyboard which forced me to delete and retype everything until I just gave up and allowed a few mangled posts to reach SubChat uncorrected. This computer's better; I can even type out the HTML to make my logo without severe annoyance. I have a duplicate (and expendable) account for use on public computers, especially like this one; I can't get access into where it stores its cookies, so I can't wipe my login information when I'm done. I doubt there are any SubChatters on jury duty in the same court today, or anyone who would know enough about SubChat to visit and be malicious enough to post in my name, but I'm paranoid. Hence the pseudo-sockpuppet. If someone posts in my name, I can simply ask Larry to ban the duplicate. Incidentally, due to the ban on photography inside the courthouse (don't worry, there are no trains here), I left the camera and camcorder at home. This is literally the first time in weeks that I ever left the house for any length of time without one or the other. I feel naked without them! |
