The CSX transfer run from Lansdale to Philadelphia, C746, literally knocked down the signal for the industrial track (signal on the right on last picture), dragging it across Main Street until it hit the in service signal for the runner, taking it out as well. The runner signal is back in service this morning with the remnants of the new signal and cage along side. |

The Safetran unilens signals don't use LED's, but fiber optics.Also, it seems like SEPTA is again fucking things up by disregarding the "drawf signal to the right of the track they govern" rule. Yeah, like that won't cause confusion. The million dollar question is when SEPTA will finally install proper full aspect home signals at the interlockings with 'C' boards for CSS failure. They should visit the NJT Pascack Valley line or the MTBA old colony to see how it's done be done. |

The Safetran unilens signals don't use LED's, but fiber optics.The two aren’t incompatible, but it looks like the illumination is some sort of incandescent bulb from this photograph. I’m using the reflector as a guide, though it is amusing from an engineering point of view to find the light spread out, only to be collimated again by the fiber optic adapter. LED laser direct to fiber next time? |

Without quizzing the engineering dept, I would have to guess that someone decided the signals needed cages long after the placement of the signals was worked out. Probably thought it was a good idea at down at HQ. I did not think vandalism was such a big problem there, not like in the city. I was told that the cages were a big hit (with SEPTA that is) when they were installed on the R8 Fox Chase Line, where the signals had been a favorite target of idle or drunken teenagers. |

HA ha, are we learning yet?Seriously, dwarf signals should be mounted low and to the right of the track they govern. Not just randomly placed there they seem to fit. Someone needs the credit for installing the Unilens signals as opposed to some sort of MNRR style stack which can only ever display two aspects. This means that at least SEPTA can recover from its Rule 562 debacle. |
