Question: Real Info

You guys helped me out good with the express bus situation, so I come back again. After at least 2 months now, it seems that all (6) & <6> trains have the new announcement system, right? So, why is it that almost every time I get on the train, the conductor repeats the Last Stop announcement right before we get into Brooklyn Bridge, and also interrupting the loop announcement? I know, not every conductor does this, but when they do (like today), it forces people to kick me off the train. And, today, I asked a T/O, and she said, "No, it's not ok to ride the loop." In my mind, I know that the announcements say otherwise, but it's best not to argue. So, I'm asking here for the real information so that my friend and I do not get arrested tomorrow with the massive amount of cops at B'klyn Bridge: Is it truely genuine and OK to ride the City Hall Loop? I only ask because recently, I've been bombarded with nos from many passengers, some Conductors (Who by the way, play the announcement themselves), and one Train Operator. That's my question, and I'm only asking to make sure. I hate it when the workers of the MTA can't give me the right info (and, sometimes, I know it isn't their fault), so I really want to make sure. By the way: The old LCD signs are making a comeback on the 4 train (I forgot the set number). Thanks in advance.

You are allowed to ride through the City Hall Loop. You're not going to be arrested.

Unfortunately, I've witnessed many conductors, who upon arriving at Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall on the downtown platform, will allow the new message to play fully, and then, for some stupid reason, make a manual PA announcement telling everybody to get off the train. Stupid.

I once rode the loop at the RFW, but I don't recall what the official policy was at the time.

I also rode about 48% of the loop standing at the RFW on an R142. Cab ride! Too bad I had to share. :(

Thats not stupid. Most passengers who are already on the train arriving at BB or on the platform looking for a 4 or 5 are looking for service south, not back north. most of the assinine arguments here are for foamers, not for the people who need to go somewhere more important. Hearing an out of service announcement will guide most of the sheep where they need to go.

Yes......... but what's Stupid is the remaining foamers not being let to ride the MainLine loop.

Yes... dump the geese whom have places to go.
BUT WHY deny the geese whom have loops to foam.

After all, it's Main Line Trackage, no????

WHen I worked IRT Misc. (1993) the rule was the trains had to be picked clean, and they had platform C/Rs to ensure that. It isn't that way now. There is no enforcement of that so apparently you can pretend not to hear the announcement and get away with it. I was getting off a LEX train at BB to work WTC a couple of weeks back, and the southbound 6 was making an automated announcment that the next stop was to the effect of the northbound side. If I was a pax that didn't know the system and heard "next stop", which train would I run to? Brooklyn Bridge IS the last stop for anyone on the train arriving at BB. If they really wanted you off that train they will get you off.

In case you're not aware, these are the last three messages you see or hear on the downtown (6) train:

(6) THIS IS
(6) CANAL ST

"This is a Brooklyn Bridge-bound (6) train. The next. And last stop is Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall."

(6) BROOKLYN BRIDGE
(6) THE NEXT STOP IS
(6) BROOKLYN BRIDGE
(6) 5:04 PM

"This is Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall. Transfer is available to the (4)(5)(J)(M) and (Z) trains."

(6) THIS IS
(6) BROOKLYN BRIDGE
(6) LAST STOP

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is the last downtown stop on this train. The next stop on this train will be Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall on the uptown platform. Ladies and gentlemen, not only is it unsafe, it is a violation to ride or walk between cars, except in an emergency, or when directed by a police officer or the train crew."

(6) LAST STOP
(6) 5:08 PM

Seriously, if they don't get the clue....

I was trying to get panel information for the R142A BVE train, and asked a TSS who was standing on the Brooklyn Bridge if I could do so. Got a cab ride around the loop, and was able to successfully complete the sketch for the BVE panel! Too bad Mr. Mackoy is no longer developing BVE it seems...

It's an estimate.

I know that I was unable to get a cab ride from Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall. On the return trip from City Hall to Brooklyn Bridge, I asked the various TSS's/other officials, and they agreed to let me into the cab, but then everyone wanted a cab ride and despite my best efforts at Manipulative PositioningTM, I was unable to remain in the cab for the entire time.

However, since the return trip overlapped the first half somewhat (since the train stopped with just the nose poked into the station at City Hall), I estimated a figure of about 48% of the loop covered in-cab.

You and I rode through the loop during rush hour a few years back, remember? When we got to the n/b platform, we got off the train and gleefully yelled, "We did it! We did it! We did it!"

We strategically rode in the last car of the train. Nobody checked to see if anyone was still on board.

I've rode through the loop several times already. On some occasions (not all the time), they turn off the lights while going through City Hall. Like the last time I went. A bunch of us had so many bags from K-Mart on Astor Place and we needed to get back to the Bronx. Some didn't want to go all the way up the stairs just to get to the northbound platform so I suggested we go on the loop. WWe stayed and as the train rounded the loop all the lights on the R142A went out. We ended up at the northbound side after about 5 minutes. No problem indeed.
