Subway pics, videos, and also rantings about NYPD 5/6/07

Today, well, let's just say my luck ran out.
I was at Roosevelt Avenue today coming home from some personal business, I got bored and decided to take out my camera and get some shots. I was standing, with camera in hand lining up and focusing my should-be perfect shot, while this cop on the Manhattan bound platforms yells at me, "HEY NO PICTURES ON THE TRAIN!". I was scared stiff. I couldn't even say anything, I just quickly slipped my camera back in my jacket pocket.
Well, it looks like I've been yelled at by all 3 now. First conductors, then train operators, and now finally the police. I really find it disgraceful, even after said on the media (NY1 did a report on cops yelling at people for taking pics), I still have to go through being scared by cops for taking pictures.
Hey, I was lucky, at least I didn't get handcuffed and my camera taken away!

If you want here are the details:

Location Roosevelt Avenue (I was on Jamaica platform, cop was on Manhattan platform)
Time around 7:20 PM
Date Sunday, May 6th, 2007

I put partial blame on myself though, I was so damn stupid to miss that big cop on the other platform.

NYPD? New York's Finest? HA!
Not in my life, that's for sure.

Anyway, pics from today:

1) I would have continued with my picture taking.
2) I would have turned and taken a picture of the officer.
3) Hope a train comes in before he can get to this platform.
3) I would have published that picture here.

If worse come to worse, I could always have my LION *EAT* that officer.
Can always claim he looked like a wildebeest.

Nice pics! You're starting to get good at this!

Sorry about the cop. Heh, I'd prob'ly have taken the picture anyway!

You should print out a copy of Section 1050.9(c) from the MTA rules here and keep it with you just in case, although it didn't do me any good. :(

There seem to be too many similar reports surfacing again. It has to be more than coincidental - the NYPD and/or the MTA is trying to enforce their non-existant photo ban again. Now that the vocal opposition to the photo ban has died down the cops are once again trying to shut us down.

If I make a suggestion.

Carry copies of all pertinent rules and regulation pertaining to photography on New York MTA property. Make sure all said documents are dated and the source of documents are clearly visible on the documents (web site URL, agency regulation document title, agency memorandums, official agency letters and state or municipal codes if applicable).

When confronted by police or employees warning you to not to take pictures, put camera away, hand copy of documents mentioned above to police officer or MTA employees, say nothing, walk away.

If enough folks do this often enough maybe people within the ranks of MTA employees and police will finely learn what the regulation really are and this nonsense will stop.

Haha, walk away from a police officer. That's gonna go over well, John.

Think about it, the police officer or transit employee usually makes these warnings from a distance. You respond by putting your camera away (which is obeying the warning made by the police officer), approach police officer or transit employee, hand copies of documents mentioned previously to police officer or transit employee, say nothing, walk away.

In my opinion if one does this in a cooperative, friendly and non confrontational manner one will likely not end up being detained.

The single page that is shown in the photograph that Nilet posted is in my opinion insufficient. A complete copy of all the pertinent document should be presented.

I know that they are obviously newer, but why does it seem like the R142/R142A cars have no scratchitti or vandalism visible on the windows? Forgive me if it is a dumb question, but it seems that the trains that ran before on these lines (and the R62/R62As) had scratched up windows. Do the R142/R142A cars have some new "anti-scratch" stuff on the windows, or is it there as well but not as bad since the trains are newer than the others (running since 2000)

Trains from R142 on up have a "membrane" placed over the glass. This can be scratched and win it is it is easily revoved and replaced with a new one. They are retrofitting some older trains with it but it is a slow process.

Wait, you were on the Jamaica platform and the cop was on the Manhattan-bound platform? Why should you have to listen to him if he can't immediately do anything to you because of his location?

I don't think he was intending to confront you -- if he wanted to do that, he wouldn't have yelled. He would have crossed over and talked to you there.

That's not really a "confrontation."

Perhaps it's because of fear of home grown terror like the foiled plot at Fort Dix that we found out about on Tuesday.

As said before, there are too many people who have become paranoid in my opinion since 9/11, and people in general in New York from my trips there have seemingly become increasingly hostile in part because of that.

Perhaps it's because of fear of home grown terror like the foiled plot at Fort Dix...

Didn't that plan involve a bunch of guys planning to get guns and storm a military base?

Anyway, I think a big problem is that the TA tells people to report "suspicious activity" but doesn't elaborate on what "suspicious" is. All I know is that I should consider unattended bags to be "suspicious" and report them. I never do, of course, because the last time an unattended bag was reported, I got one of these and was unable to reach my destination on time via beese or feet.

And it doesn't help that the police deliberately place seemingly unattended bags in subway stations in order to conduct legally dubious sting operations. I've seen a few lucky bags in Times Square; there were 3 bags involved on 2 seperate occasions, and they were so obvious that I strongly doubted that they would catch anybody. (Of course, if it was less obvious, someone could take the bag and say they were taking it to a lost and found.) (Although no matter how nearby the officers are, it still isn't illegal to take an obviously abandoned bag; you have to turn it in or something within a certain time period, but it's certainly not illegal to pick it up and walk away with it.)

I'm not excusing it at all:

It's just part of the problem that the rest of us who know better have to unfortunately put with apparently. Not all New Yorkers are like that, but it just seems like the further we get away from 9/11, the more hostile and paranoid some people in New York have gotten.

Just my opinion.
