R 32 Overhaul was synonymous with Phase 1, (cars below 3650 and R 32 A with Phase 2, 3650 and above.If I remember correctly there were 286 Phase 1 and 290 Phase 2 cars. |

Posted by Train Dude on Sat Apr 28 21:16:32 2007, in response to Re: R32 GE Rebuilds, posted by BrooklynBus on Sat Apr 28 20:53:35 2007. "I believe you are incorrect."I can see why you may think so. Because you might have your facts incorrect. The R-32As were built before the R-32s and thus have lower numbers. The cars, however, were overhauled beginning with the worst performing, and not in numerical order so perhaps this is what has you confused. Then again, I was one of the people who oversaw the warranty and acceptance of the R-32 GOH program back in the late 80s. So you can see why I believe that I might be correct and you may be incorrect. |

Correcting you on GOH doesn't mean that any of your other information was wrong. It is a common error. For some reason I thought they didn't mix cars with different propulsion systems, but I also remember sending out the worst cars first, so I guess you are right. Sorry for stating misinformation. |

The ENTIRE R32 fleet was built by The Budd Company. There are no "fake" 32s. However, when their General overhauls came in the late 80's, ten cars were sent to GE in Buffalo instead of Morrison Knudsen. those ten are the R 32 GEs. When the cars came back, they were split into three groups, Phase 1, phase 2 and GE R32 Phase 1-(re-built by Morrison Knudsen) have WABCO Air Brake packages, GE Master Controllers (Throttle) and Thermo King HVAC units R32 Phase 2- (also re-built by Morrison Knudsen) have NY Air Brake equipment, Westinghouse Master Controllers and Stone Safety HVAC units. (phase 1 and phase 2 sets now compise mixed 32 and 32A making the old name moot.) |

Posted by Bill from Maspeth on Sat Apr 28 23:23:25 2007, in response to Re: R32 GE Rebuilds, posted by BrooklynBus on Sat Apr 28 16:17:09 2007. When the R32's were sent out for GOH, they were sent out according to need. Meaning the worst cars went out first for GOH, irregardless of the car number. The first group of cars to return from M/K were Phase I's and the second group to return were Phase II's, figuring on a 50%/50% split. There is no relationship between car numbers and if they are a Phase I or a Phase II. Train Dude and myself work with the cars daily (albeit on a different basis) and we are in a position to know. 3348 is a Phase II. So is 3350/51 and 3352/53. But 3354/55 are Phase I's. I forget what 3356/57 are, but 3358/59 are Phase I's. Going to the end of the R32 roster, yes 3940 to 3949 are Phase II's but 3938/39 are Phase I's. In summary, between 3348 (3349 does not exist) and 3949, there is a complete mixture of Phase I's and Phase II's. |
