The R-110B was just a test vehicle for new technology and new ideas. The 67ft. design was ditched in favor of the 60ft. length. The R-1110B essentially gave us the R-143/160. Bill "Newkirk" |

What doesn't suck is that the MTA did NOT repeat the mistake they made in 1971 when they bought that era's "new technology car" in large numbers without a prototype to test the feasibility of these new bells and whistles. 35 years later, the R44 is STILL a major headache. |

It first ran on the A line in 1992, and was running on the C line as late as 2000. The R110A had a shorter service life. I believe it hasn't run in revenue service since 1997/98. |

Unlike the R11/34 cars, you cannot intermix the R110B cars with anything else as there are no other 67-ft equipment. |

When I first went to fire school in 1988, they removed a long bench seat from one of the R12s and used it as a bridge to go from car to car between adjacent tracks and the TSSs showed us how to fire a powder extinguisher into the wind. The only other time I went was after 911. The smoke generating contraption under the R30s was the only addition in those 13 years I can recall. They did not set up regular refresher courses for us before 911 and I never visited an emergency exit other than C/R and T/O breakins. I hope they send you to these important classes on an annual basis, like they do with medicals |
