It's an unpopular opinion, but to me, the R10s to R42s represent the NYC subway. The R 1-9s, eh.... The Steels and Triplexes, eh..All the IRT pre- R12s, no thanks! |

While I preferred the R10s, swaying back and forth, all the storm doors opened between cars, the crappy fans whirring (if they worked) when they were in the flats. |

A lot of people said that the R-44's and R-46's looked like commuter rail cars in the subway and were perfect for express runs and long runs. |

Question - were the R-44 and R-46 cars FRA compliant ? Just what are the FRA regulations for equipment operating on the National Railway network ?To my knowledge, the Staten Island R-44's were FRA compliant. I was told by an an employee who was a friend of mine, the S.I. R-44's had brighter headlamps and extra grab bars. Not sure about the NYC R-44/46's. Bill M. |

The SIRT cars had "brights" as well as regular sealed beams. Not sure if they still have them after their overhaul. I know this as I hooked up with this S.I. chick once, left my car in Manhattan ( before Bloomberg declared war on automobiles), so I left her place about 5 AM to catch the train to the ferry. The brights were on, he dimmed them in the station, then he activated them again outside the station. |

The SIRT cars had "brights" as well as regular sealed beamsThat would make sense since the M-1/M-3's also had high beams and are FRA mandated. When some R-46's were sent to Staten island to sub for R-44's being overhauled at Coney island shops, my friend told me the R-46 sealed beams were 60W as opposed to the 100W on SIRTOA. Bill M. |

OK, but what else does the FRA require - brighter headlights makes sense, but what else ? Do the ends of the cars require special hardware in case of a collision or other special modification ? |

Plus they didnt need "ditch lights" since they didnt have grade crossings on Staten Island. The M-1/M-3s came from the factory with subway style sealed beams. THey became ditch lights when they added a headlight on the middle of the roofline. That was the FRA mandate since there still a number of grade crossings on the Harlem Line. |

I beg to differ - SIRT did have grade crossings years ago - when I was child my parents took me and my sisters to Staten Island and we did ride the SIRT - and at the Oakwood Heights station there were grade crossings. The line did undergo a complete overhaul which removed the grade crossings but the ditch light rule came along years after the grade crossing elimination project was completed. There is a freight line in the Northwest section of the island which does have grade crossings, but no passenger service operates on those tracks. |

Indeed. several were eliminated by putting the SIRT in a trench as a subdivision was being built new Dorp? hard to remember from 1966. |

SIRT eliminated many grade crossings in the 1930. This came to a halt with the start of World War 2. This left ten grade crossings north of Great Kills. These were located at Jefferson, Bedford, Midland, Lincoln, Bancroft, Rose, Ross and Beach Avenues; New Dorp and Tysen Lanes. These were all closed between 1965 and 1966. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Yes, by the time the R44 cars were running, grade crossings were gone - the project to remove them was completed. What does the FRA require for equipment to have in order to be operated on the National railroad network ? |
