They sure took their sweet time dismantling that abandoned el segment. It was still largely intact when I drove along Jamaica Ave. in October of 1988.

Exactly.

I remember summer 1987 taking the B53 bus from Ridgewood to Sutphin to catch the LIRR. The structure ended right there.

It was cool seeing the old stations still intact for awhile. Especially Metropolitan Ave.

I think it was up until 1991?

I remember they had to shut down the LIRR between NYP & Jamaica for a weekend to allow the take down of the structure that went over their ROW

It was in 1963. At the time they were constructing the "missing link" of the BQE. Originally the BQE for some unknown reason construction stopped and the BQE dead ended at Queens Blvd between 65th Place and 68th st. All traffic was forced exited at Broadway & 69th St.
They were building an overpass carrying the LIRR in addition to punching thru a hill that was there to connect with the BQE section south of Queens Blvd that was in service. They wanted to have this in service for the upcoming Worlds Fair.
At the site there was a huge crane in place that collapsed just at the wrong time when a westbound was coming thru. It tore right thru the double decker, peeling it back like a beer can. AFAIK there was only one fatality, the engineer.

Demolition began in fall 1990. The last section over the LIRR mainline was removed by April 1991.

Unfortunately I have lost my souvenier light fixture from Queens Blvd i took when I "investigated" the abandoned segment in 1987.

I guess there wasn't much of a demand for scrap iron back then.

The westbound Rockaway Beach Branch track was left in for some years after the branch south of White Pot Junction was abandoned. I remember seeing trains stacked up there in the late afternoon waiting to go into NYP for rush hour service. There was no West Side Yard in those days so trains had to be run light back out to yards as far away as Babylon after the morning rush and brought back in for the evening rush.

What kind of moves were done to put those cars in place, any ideas?
