T/Os and C/Rs SHOULD be qualified on all equipment on their respective divisions but years ago, that wasn’t the case. I recall in the mid 1960s when the only line on the IND that had R-10s was the A, M/M on the other lines were not qualified on them. One Sunday a M/M from Queens was working the “board job”at 168th St on his RDO. A board employee one who stays at a given location until a job opens any time during the tour and then he is assigned to that run which could be anywhere on the division. At the time the AA only ran R-1/9s but it happened that a M/M called off from an A run at 207th St. Since that board M/M wasn’t R-10 qualified, he couldn’t cover the run. |

And what kind of training does transit provide on new equipment? Do you think that there are some transit workers who are trained on all the new equipment, but would prefer to operate only the older cars, because they are not comfortable with interacting with the "fancier" equipment? |

Not to mention having a handle on AMUE braking.:) Then there's that reverse arrangement on BMT equipment. |

When I was a vacation relief M/M in 1969 most of the newer M/M on the V/R roster seemed to prefer the SMEE equipment which was the newest at the time. I was able to get mostly AM work with S/S off even though I wasn’t that high on the V/R roster because I picked old timers’ runs on lines like the LL, M and the old Myrtle Ave el which had the oldest equipment. The only other M/M on the V/R roster who was only a few pegs ahead of me was big Ed Davis who like me preferred prewar equipment to the new stuff. A few old timers I knew mentioned that they preferred the older equipment because they felt that the SMEEs were “too automatic." |

One of our now-deceased posters also preferred the AMUE equipment, even to the point of trading runs if it meant being able to run IND old timers. |

What about the R-188 varient? Is there a separate qualification for them. Buffs need to know! 😅 |

That would be an accurate statement. Of course, I can be called out for being a practitioner of the other extreme; that is, some of my typical "Subject" lines are as follows:1. Aviation 2. Fly Delta Jets 3. Mets I Meant To Write The Met 4. Princeton Lacrosse On one hand, mine are short and sweet if not to the point; that is, not as descriptive as they might be which causes some of you "on the fence" to open it out of curiosity only to find out it is zzzzzzzzzz. On the other hand, heypaul does not need to write anything in the body of the message because everything and then some, and then some more, is already in the "Subject". |

Would you remember if any of the veteran motormen chose retirement when the prewar equipment was retired on lines like the LL, M and the Myrtle Ave El? I'm also wondering if now there are some crew members who are uncomfortable operating the NTT, partly out of concerns that the newer equipments abilities to tell tales? |

Those jobs tend to get picked a bit quicker.. |

There is a slight difference. The controller handles on the R-142s is in the center of the console but on the 188s, it was relocated to the right hand side like the R-143sand 160s. On the R-211s, the controller ois back in the center of the console. |

R142 R142A controllers the same as the R211s Been inside both Cabs operated them as I said yet the R188 never operated them never been inside the cab. |

Correct. It makes more sense to have a single controller in the center of the cab so that both a righty and a southpaw can be comfortable operating. |
