When I was a vacation relief M/M in 1969 most of the newer M/M on the V/R roster seemed to prefer the SMEE equipment which was the newest at the time. I was able to get mostly AM work with S/S off even though I wasn’t that high on the V/R roster because I picked old timers’ runs on lines like the LL, M and the old Myrtle Ave el which had the oldest equipment. The only other M/M on the V/R roster who was only a few pegs ahead of me was big Ed Davis who like me preferred prewar equipment to the new stuff. A few old timers I knew mentioned that they preferred the older equipment because they felt that the SMEEs were “too automatic. That's very interesting. Would you remember if any of the veteran motormen chose retirement when the prewar equipment was retired on lines like the LL, M and the Myrtle Ave El? I'm also wondering if now there are some crew members who are uncomfortable operating the NTT, partly out of concerns that the newer equipments abilities to tell tales? |
