LED Lighting in Subway Cars |
|
Posted by heypaul on Sat Mar 29 14:18:05 2025 When I finally got into a Q the other night at Stillwell, the car lighting seemed very intense especially right under the light. About a week ago someone mentioned that they were convert the fluorescents in subway cars to LED's. It seemed too much. |

On the NYCT cars, lighting is accomplished with battery voltage (37,5vdc). The fluorescent tubes are powered by an inverter Ballast. LED bulbs usually have an internal regulator circuit so can function on a wide range of voltages. |

So if the TA needs some fluorescent light bulbs for their trains, they can run down to the nearest Home Depot and pick up the same bulbs that can be used in the house, correct? |

It seemed too much.I was riding home on the Q tonight, when I think I saw the uncomfortably lit R68A 524x going in the opposite direction. I wasn't even in the car, but I felt like the skin on my face had been irradicated. My handy photo meter recorded a ph of 11. I think these dangerous levels of electromagnetic radiation can be avoided by simply disconnecting every other car light fixture. Even with only 1/2 the LED bulbs lit, the cars will be more than adequately lit. And you'll be saving loads of electricity. |
