The Increased Presence of 6xxx Series R46's on Q, N and W Trains |
|
Posted by heypaul on Sat Mar 1 22:00:35 2025 I guess I find it refreshing to see a 6xxx series R46 mixed in with the more common 5xxx R46's. Sort of like a distant relative showing up at a family gathering. But I haven't seen a train with both 4 car sections being 6xxx series cars. Has anyone who pays attention to car numbers seen an 8 car 6xxx consist on a Q, N or W train? If not, is there a reason why they're mixing 6xxx and 5xxx cars? I realize that there may not be many people for whom this is of interest. |

There just aren't that many 6000 series R46s on the Q. I don't think there is any reason other than the probability of 2 sets together is low. They are the same cars even if they've been separated for many years now. |

They are the same cars even if they've been separated for many years now. These 6000 series cars have been displaced by the arrival of new equipment on the A & C lines. I guess they excess an entire 8 car train, rather than excessing 4 cars at a time. Is there a danger of a full 8 car reassigned train set getting homesick for mainline A & C service somehow finagling its way back to its home territory or perhaps hiding somewhere in an out of the way section of track in a fit of pique? |

Don't forget that the R46s were all renumbered (not in order) in 1994-95, so some of today's 6xxx series started out with lower numbers than some of today's 5xxx series. Example: 1220 ---> 5984 536 -----> 6042 R46 Renumbering |

Could it be that the mixing of the renumbered cars is governed by regrouping of cars by their car numbers? I will have to do some field research to see if this is the underlying explanation. |

I was out and about today on the Q train..I was able to observe five 8 car R46's and they were all pure bred 5000 series cars. I know that the MTA regularly monitors Subchat, to keep their ears close to the track bed and to the concerns of the railien community. Could it be that the powers read of my concerns and immediately removed all mongrelized R46's? |

Yes I can understand why.If I recall correctly we may have taken a ride on that Mack back in 2009 or 2010 when they would run the old timers during the holiday season. |
