If MTA could be mostly in the real estate business with little or no transit and do what GTJ REIT did when the MTA took over the private buses they would.

I assume that Amtrak crew would operate the equipment with an LIRR pilot.

Probably not. Amtrak crews to Montauk most likely would have to endure qualifying classes similar to what MNRR crews had to go thru to run NJT trains from New Haven over the Hell Gate to the Meadowlands. In addition, IIRC MNR crews that went to NJ had to get qualified for Sunnyside yds.

I think that's pretty much what happened to Penn Central after it went bankrupt. The government got the railroads and a successor company kept the real estate.

Upon closer examination the contract is worded so that Amtrak could operate over the LIRR without violating engineers' work rules, or at least the ones that have been agreed to above the table.
