This depresses me to no end. I might become suicidal when they retire the R6s.

But, progress...

I'm depressed as well. I managed the R-46 warranty and acceptance at Jamaica Shop in the early 90s. That fleet became "mine" from then, on.

Understand, but given my faves (R 32's--I am a Budd disciple) everything newer is just equipment...

When I got hired in late 1979 and thru at least the mid 80's when I regularly worked the line, we called it "The Dog".

B was Boy
M was Mary
N was Nancy

Because with accents, that was the way to make sure with B & D; M & N.

Yep. Once the R68s go I'm probably gonna just abandon any interest in the subway

That will be the end of roll signs. Where is the nearest bus/train to NYC that would still be using roll signs at that point?

I remain interested in both the history, and further route extensions/service changes, but as to equipment...meh. I live in BART territory which ran its last legacy cars a while back. (Yes I was out that day) So, for me it is just a mediocre subway (no owl service...) which overcharges (distance based rates, no passes ) That said, I do make efforts to take youths on the rails--for instance a ride on the first all EMU day of Caltrain service.

Not gonna lie, I NEVER liked the 44/46/68 car classes. Whack-ass RFWs (if they weren't being covered with newspapers, jackets, posters), big, lumbering, couldn't walk between cars.

There was a video going around today with 6170 and friends making the same move to 38th St. Yard.

The R44/46 had the handsomest front end of all car classes, mostly because of the flush storm door (which apparently proved impractical and was abandoned in the next several car classes), and the chains hidden behind the trap door, and also the graceful curve of the fiberglass crease above the windows and door.

Of course, all good things must come to an end...

The R68 front is nowhere near as nice looking. The storm door is again recessed, the chains are visible along with the by-now standard springs, and the fiberglass crease is straight across, not parallel to the curve of the windows.

I agree about the RFW and the walking between cars, and while I liked the R46 class originally, when an R46 arrives these days they're sad looking and tired. I never liked the R68 class, especially when they reconfigured and linked them and removed the RFW. To me those are the lumbering hippos.
