How would a track defect cause hundreds of flat wheels? I thought the only ordinary cause for that was slip-side that ABS couldn't prevent. |

You seem to be inferring something that was not stated. I did not see where the issue was attributed to flat wheels. I see only abnormal wheel wear being reported. Flat wheels do not indicate wheels wear. If I were to speculate as to what wheel wear they are referring to, abnormal flange wear would be what I'd suspect. |

Flat wheels came from the title of the post. I have no way to know what the actual wheel problem is, am just reading what's posted here. |

To be fair:The steel wheels of a subway car typically last months before needing to be refreshed and resurfaced through a process called “truing,” which ensures the wheels are round and properly tapered to glide smoothly over the rails That infers flat wheels. |

To be accurate, Wheel truing is used to maintain a correct wheel profile. The most critical aspect is that of the flange which ensures that the wheel will follow the rail. Flange issues where wheel truing is necessary can be, high flange, low flange or thin flange. Flat spots of 3" or less would be noisy to be sure but would not necessitate a car being removed from service. |

There are devices that apply grease to the flange before a curve to prevent wear. An inoperative greaser or an improperly gauged track or even an improperly placed guard rail can cause excessive flange wear. Of course we are just speculating as we don't know that the issue is actually related to flange wear, either. |
