My recollection is that the Brighton trains were Standards but the 4th Avenue locals were R27/30s. I don't recall ever seeing Triplexes on Queens Bl.

August 1967, three months before Chrystie (which put the EE on Queens Bl. and sent the RR to Astoria):

June 1970, with the R16 EEs:

That R-27 still has its original front route sign.

It was only after Chrystie St that they replaced the route signs. The cars weren't that old at that point.

The R-27/30s kept the old BMT titles on their route signs in addition to, "Broadway." I'm pretty sure that RR train we took on April 30, 1967 still had its original Broadway-4th Ave. Local side signs. I can vaguely remember seeing a side route sign like that, anyway.

When I was a kid getting on an RR at 65th St, I'd see all the signage and not one hint that the train went to Brooklyn. 4th Ave & 95 st to me was confusing and misleading since there was a 4th ave and a 95th St in Manhattan. But at least is was something. When a Standard came in there was nothing on the head end.

Every once in a while in the 1970s and maybe into the early 80s, especially on the R16s, I would see the old signage on the RR, N, B trains. But mostly it was the colored circle with the letters in them like the "EE" photo

Back when the Brighton Lcl was still going to Ctl, I happened to be railfanning in Queens one afternoon and saw a D type on a Brighton Lcl headed towards Ctl and was able to catch it for a ride.

THat's exactly why the BMT standards did not appeal to me at first. They didn't have any signs up front and I had gotten used to looking above the front storm door for signage. Back then, I paid no attention to the marker lights.

I'll bet those Triplexes ran along that stretch as though they'd been souped up.:)

Some R-16s still had their original BMT numbered route curtains.

A BMT car on the Queens IND is on my list of holy grail photos I know must exist somewhere.

The holiest: an MP41 at Chambers St.

That's why when the R32s came around they had to put up those "Know Trains at a Glance" posters on the BMT, they left off the branches and they all just said "Broadway Express" or "Broadway Local via Bridge". They were replacing the Triplexes with them and those cars carried the old BMT numbers not the new letters.

I have one of those "Know Trains at a Glance" placards! Got in touch with a fellow Subtalker and we made arrangements to have the placard shipped out to Denver on a Greyhound bus. They called me from the bus terminal when it arrived and I swung by to pick it up. It's displayed in my garage now.

I remember seeing one such placard at Whitehall Street on June 18, 1967.

Yes,but I personally never saw that. I've never saw a picture of a 32 with numbered routes either.

The R-32s had letter route signs right from the start.

Although most of the R-16s had only Eastern Div readings, a very small number also had Southern Div readings. The week I worked the Culver Shuttle as a M/M with an R-16, the “north”car still had a Southern Div roll sign in the route box, so together with the “SS” in the destination box which all R-16s had, I displayed “5/Culver” on the route sign.

In its infinite wisdom, the cesspool of incompetence that passes for TA management reasoned that since neither the IND nor the IRT readings contained the names of the branch lines why should the BMT be any different. It never occurred to them that unlike the other divisions, the BMT was unique in that it had a common terminal for most of the Southern Div branch lines so the branch line names were necessary. When I first started as a platform C/R in 1966, I was working the S/B plat at 34th St when I heard loud voice yelling “What the hell train is this?” He was going from car to car trying to find out what the S/B exp in the station was and had been living outside NY for several years and was looking for the familiar route names as he remembered them the last time he was in NY. When I explained to him the new signage he responded ”That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard of” and he was right.
