Paris Fare Restructuring

Posted by New Flyer #857 on Wed Dec 4 08:16:54 2024

In January, Paris is essentially doing away with its zone system, but instead of going the full-integration route, it is still discriminating between Metro/RER and bus/tram. That means that, unlimited packages aside, one still won't be able to get off the Metro and onto a bus/tram without paying a separate fare. Especially with the base fare being 2.50 EUR now, I'm not sure why they won't let people transfer between these modes.

The lack of a metro/bus transfer does not make much difference within Paris.

83% of the buildings are within 500 meters (0.3 miles) of a Metro entrance. The 1901 goal was to expand the Metro so that every building in Paris (the 20 arrondissments) would be within 500 meters. They have come pretty close.

The conventional threshold is 800 meters (0.5 miles) of a Metro entrance. That's 97% of all buildings in Paris.

The bus system is clearly superfluous, even though 95% of the buildings are within 400 meters of a bus stop.

As a point of comparison, the figure for NYC (5 boroughs) is 43% within 800 meters of a subway entrance and 73% within 800 meters of a bus stop.

I would hardly say the Paris bus system is superfluous. Having been to Paris many times, the buses are always full, and they run fast. There are numerous trips within the 20 arrondissements that are faster by bus because of no need to make a subway transfer. The subway transfers in Paris are often quite circuitous and can eat up a lot of the speed savings otherwise gained by using the metro.

There was an excellent website for RATP bus 38 (as DeKalb!), but it now can be found as RATP bus 92. The drivers enjoy their job.
