2024 Holiday Train

Posted by Bill from Maspeth on Fri Nov 15 22:03:11 2024

For all 5 Sundays in December, it will be the R1/9's leaving 2nd Ave. @ 10,12, 1 and 3 to 96/2 leaving there @ 11,1 3 and 5.

IDK if it will be running as 8 or 9 cars.

Eh...like the Parade of Trains, it's the same every year. I preferred it when they ra to Queens or Uptown.

Gotta try my best to be in town when they are running & catch a ride or two! Seeing those trains brings back memories as to the last time I rode in an R 1-9. It was in the summer of '75 and I was coming from the DMV at Sutphin Blvd on an E Train with new plates for my '63 Ford Galaxy which I paid $200 for.

I'll take the 12 out of 2d Avenue on the first and last weeks, if I can make 'em. And be on it for the 1 out of 96th.

But the run between West 4th and 34th St is an express run.

They've never run the holiday train express AFAIK. Too much crossing over. In fact, the one time it was going up CPW when I was on it they ran it express on local.

Go to https://www.nytransitmuseum.org/holidaynostalgiarides/, scroll down to Routes, and you'll see that the Holiday Train isn't stopping at 14th and 23rd Streets. I assume the crossover will be at some point before or around West 4th St; probably easier to do it that way if the last stop is 96th & 2nd.

They've been using the switch just past Broadway-Lafayette the last few years. Trains can access the 63rd St. portion from either track beyond 47-50th.

Why not just keep it on the local the entire way and eliminate switching/merging?

probably easier to do it that way if the last stop is 96th & 2nd.

Of course they must have a reason, but why is it easier?

The obvious thing would be to act like an F train from Houston/2 Ave to 57/6, then cross over to the Q track between there and 72/2. A single non-standard move in the entire run.

That would be the logical way to do it. It could prevent merging delays.

And on Dec. 16, they covered the CPW dash in just over six minutes. Had that train gotten out of 59th a tad faster, it would have been a sub-six-minute run. Once it got going, it kept going full tilt until the timers before 125th.
