probably easier to do it that way if the last stop is 96th & 2nd.

Of course they must have a reason, but why is it easier?

The obvious thing would be to act like an F train from Houston/2 Ave to 57/6, then cross over to the Q track between there and 72/2. A single non-standard move in the entire run.
