Posted by heypaul on Tue Oct 29 12:08:14 2024 Service changes on the A, C, D, and Q lines in November 2024There will be major service changes while we replace switches at 59 St-Columbus Circle. Here’s what you need to know. New York City Transit Updated October 15, 2024 9:00 a.m. What we’re doing From November 4-18, there will be weeknight service changes on the lines and weekend service changes on the lines. During weeknights, November 4-8 and 11-15: trains won’t run between 145 St and W 4 St-Washington Sq, and will run in two sections. trains won’t run between 145 St and 42 St-Bryant Park, and will run in two sections. Over the weekends of November 8-11 and 15-18: trains won’t run between 145 St and W 4 St-Washington Sq, and will run in two sections. trains won’t run at all. trains won’t run between 145 St and 42 St-Bryant Park, and will run in two sections. trains won’t run between 96 St and Times Sq-42 St. Additional service changes are coming in late December and January as we complete this project. Other service changes may also affect your trip. Check planned service changes or service status, or use the MTA app for more information. Why we’re doing it We’re replacing switches at 59 St-Columbus Circle on the lines, which allow trains to move between the express and local tracks and the 8 Av and 6 Av lines. These switches have reached the end of their useful lives and need to be replaced. New switches will enable us to deliver more reliable service to the over 500,000 riders who rely on these lines each day. Weeknight service changes, November 4-8 and 11-15 trains From 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., trains won’t run between 145 St and W 4 St-Washington Sq. trains will run in two sections: Between Inwood-207 St and 145 St. Between Far Rockaway-Mott Av and W 4 St-Washington Sq, on the to 63 St/Lexington Av, and on the to 96 St. shuttle trains will run normally between Euclid Av and Ozone Park-Lefferts Blvd. For service between 145 St and 59 St-Columbus Circle, use nearby stations. Transfer at 168 St or Fulton St . Free shuttle buses will also run between 145 St and 96 St , making local stops. They should not have the Q involved.D from Brooklyn should turn north of W.4th. A should turn at 42/6. Passengers could use the new transfer for the #1 train uptown at TSq. Having the A going to 96/2 would be extremely confusing to the public. |

I think the idea was to try to put the A train as near as possible to west side midtown as possible. If you're a rider between midtown and Brooklyn, the A train is available on Sixth Avenue. Decades ago when the 57th Street-Sixth Avenue station was the terminal, the A train could terminate there. That station is close enough to 59th Street-Columbus Circle. With A trains and F trains sharing the same tracks the MTA will not terminate A trains at 57th Street, so that is why the A trains are being sent to 96th Street on the Eastside of Manhattan. If you are a rider from the upper Westside, Inwood or the Bronx, the bus transfer at 145th Street-St. Nicholas to the 96th Street-Broadway 1-2-3 station helps those folks travel down the Westside of Manhattan, with transfers to A and D train services in midtown and lower Manhattan. And this is an example of why I would as part of Phase 2 have a connection at 125/St. Nicholas to and from the SAS:With that, in a situation like this, the (A) and (D) could run normally to 125 and then go to the SAS and run there to 63rd/Lex, switching to the (F) track there and from there go via 6th Avenue and then normal routes. |
