I think the idea was to try to put the A train as near as possible to west side midtown as possible. If you're a rider between midtown and Brooklyn, the A train is available on Sixth Avenue. Decades ago when the 57th Street-Sixth Avenue station was the terminal, the A train could terminate there. That station is close enough to 59th Street-Columbus Circle. With A trains and F trains sharing the same tracks the MTA will not terminate A trains at 57th Street, so that is why the A trains are being sent to 96th Street on the Eastside of Manhattan. If you are a rider from the upper Westside, Inwood or the Bronx, the bus transfer at 145th Street-St. Nicholas to the 96th Street-Broadway 1-2-3 station helps those folks travel down the Westside of Manhattan, with transfers to A and D train services in midtown and lower Manhattan.
