According to an old time BMT trainmaster, now deceased, when he was a M/M working midnights on the Sea Beach, they did run a single D unit overnight. The C/R used a special removable handle that inserted into a receptacle just inside the door controls, It was the same device used on the C types and Qs when operating a single unit. |

If you've ever seen the 1929 movie Applause, there is a scene at Chambers St., disguised as Times Square, with a single Triplex, signed as a 4, pulling in on one of the inner tracks from the south end. IIRC it's number 6000, and you can see the conductor inside. At the time, Chambers St. was a terminus; it would not become a through station until 1931. That Triplex then pulls out and heads towards Canal St. |
