According to an old time BMT trainmaster, now deceased, when he was a M/M working midnights on the Sea Beach, they did run a single D unit overnight. The C/R used a special removable handle that inserted into a receptacle just inside the door controls, It was the same device used on the C types and Qs when operating a single unit.
