Light Rail/Trackless Overhead Components

Posted by Q65A on Mon Sep 9 16:50:09 2024

Not subway related but those interested in the electrical engineering of overhead wiring systems for light rail and trackless trolleys might be interested in perusing this catalog from Ohio Brass:
Ohio Brass Catalog No. 76

Each one of those pages is easier to read and more informative than any products website today.

FWIW, the 'Light Rail' brand dates back to the appalling DoD style cost overruns in the building of BART. A couple of victims of libertarian railfan disease (gennerally anti-gov't but supportive of commuting by rail) got involved in promoting the San Diego system. By refusing any Fed money, they escaped from Buy Amerian, and disability access regs. The first group of cars were off the shelf German products. Light Rail was "new","modern?, and not obsolete streetcars. Despite supposed cost savings, rail transit has become another painful example of how US gov't funded projects are grossly expensive, but, they keep the kleptogarch/political donor class smiling.

"The first group of cars were off the shelf German products"

Presumably that means products that just worked out of the box and lasted more than 2 weeks. If so, it sounds like the libertarians got something right (for once).

AFAIK their service record was good--high MDBF, few glitches on delivery. As a side note, current Caltrain EMUs get a 1000 mile shakedown before being "accepted" Prudent, in my view.
OTOH, the bleep the disabled money saving was evil IMHO. It has since been corrected.
As a long time streetcar afficionado--grew up around DC when they were the backbone--I didn't need the "re-branding" as LRVs. I am certainly glad to see the many restorations (most current LRV services greatly or completely follow former electric rail routes) as I prefer rail over rubber--electric over diresel. As to tjhe libertarians, the essay I can no longer find from the then Free Congress Foundation New Electric Railway Journal was "Why Conservatives should support Commuter Rail" The basic premise was that ifg daddy took the train to the city for his white collar desk jockey paycheck, then the family only needed one car for mommy to chauffeur the children... That meant she didn't need a job to support a second car.
Not my ideal.
