AFAIK their service record was good--high MDBF, few glitches on delivery. As a side note, current Caltrain EMUs get a 1000 mile shakedown before being "accepted" Prudent, in my view.
OTOH, the bleep the disabled money saving was evil IMHO. It has since been corrected.
As a long time streetcar afficionado--grew up around DC when they were the backbone--I didn't need the "re-branding" as LRVs. I am certainly glad to see the many restorations (most current LRV services greatly or completely follow former electric rail routes) as I prefer rail over rubber--electric over diresel. As to tjhe libertarians, the essay I can no longer find from the then Free Congress Foundation New Electric Railway Journal was "Why Conservatives should support Commuter Rail" The basic premise was that ifg daddy took the train to the city for his white collar desk jockey paycheck, then the family only needed one car for mommy to chauffeur the children... That meant she didn't need a job to support a second car.
Not my ideal.
