I have to wonder if there was more of a significance to the "Redbird" nickname than just the post-1980's paint scheme. Remember, "Redbird" was also a nickname for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team - situated in the same city where the St. Louis Car Co. built the bulk of these mainstays (excepting the R-26/28's) of the IRT division. (And the connections between rapid/surface transit and baseball - over the last 60 years alone, since 1964, the #7 train with the New York Mets, and the #4 above and CC / D / B trains below with the New York Yankees. Plus, the BMT Prospect Park station near where the old Brooklyn Dodgers played at Ebbets Field, and the Polo Grounds Shuttle and 155th Street-8th Avenue station of the IND Concourse line which took people to see the New York (baseball) Giants to 1957.)

What is intersting is that the first cars from St Louis Car delivered to the NYCTS after unification, the R-17s were a Tuscan Red slightly darker than the Gunn Fox red that the cars got later.

And the R-29's, R-33ML's and R-36ML's, when first delivered, had a Tartan Red that was slightly brighter than that Gunn Fox Red, no?

Yes. The R-29s through 33 and 36MLs were much brighter more usually referred to as “fire engine red.” Just prior to the MTA silver and blue scheme, a large number of cars starting with the R-12s up to and including the R-30s were done in the Tartar red as a temporary measure. For some reason, however, the R-21s through 28s on the IRT were left out of that program.
