I have to wonder if there was more of a significance to the "Redbird" nickname than just the post-1980's paint scheme. Remember, "Redbird" was also a nickname for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team - situated in the same city where the St. Louis Car Co. built the bulk of these mainstays (excepting the R-26/28's) of the IRT division. (And the connections between rapid/surface transit and baseball - over the last 60 years alone, since 1964, the #7 train with the New York Mets, and the #4 above and CC / D / B trains below with the New York Yankees. Plus, the BMT Prospect Park station near where the old Brooklyn Dodgers played at Ebbets Field, and the Polo Grounds Shuttle and 155th Street-8th Avenue station of the IND Concourse line which took people to see the New York (baseball) Giants to 1957.) |
