There are some hurdles to clear (overnight construction at bridges/tunnels that can mess up the whole line, the limited number of East River crossings on road vs. on rail, as examples) but I stand against the whole "laws of physics don't apply in NY" mentality. If there's good strategy and good will, a night-bus operation can occur in NY as in other major cities around the world. A limited example was seen during Covid, though that was rushed together because of the situation. In more tranquil times, a design from scratch can take place that really helps people get around.None of the above, however, takes into account if it's worth it to shut the subway system down overnight though. I understand even during Covid the trains just kept running without passengers? That's ok but there would have to be demonstrable benefits to the overnight shutdown, including less service diversions during the day, possibly lower cost of operations (can some station/tunnel lights be turned off at night?), etc. Another way of putting it is if it turns out that by the time the shutdown procedures are complete it's practically time to reopen, then eh. . . |

That’s because dictionaries are “descriptive” and will give commonly used definitions even when these definitions are wrong. After all, if you don’t understand the sense a word is used in and need to look it up, it would make sense that the dictionary has the definition of the sense it was used in instead of leaving the reader confused. A good dictionary should include a note on usage. |

They cut those trains in the 70s supposedly because of crime and to have an excuse to kick the homeless out. About 10 years ago they restored service from 1 am to 2 am because the demand was there. |

When I was there in the 80s London pubs would close at 11 and the tube ended at 12, or something like that. The bell for last call would sound and everybody had one last ale and the tube would be packed after that. |

Public Houses (pubs) are allowed to apply to stay open later but most don’t. But I think that bars and clubs can stay open later. Still it ends up that most of London at 1130pm looks more like NYC at 2 or 3am. |

WFH is a direct result from the "scamdemic", thus leaving the office buildings mostly empty, thus forcing many businesses on the street who depended on the workers, to go out of business. Downtown Manhattan on a weekday looks like ot used to on Sunday mornings, with most of the people not there. |

What to do when you missed the last train. . .I like the creative ideas with the all-night events. But anyway for NYC if this ever happened I think there would be a night-bus operation to replace. A practical question would be if a night-bus map, well-designed (itself a lot to ask for nowadays), could allow partial or full closure of the subway system to such an extent that the subway could benefit from said shutdown. How much of a difference is there at 3a.m. between the subway system as it is now and just having buses -- maybe even more than 3 per hour per route -- running up/down the avenues in Midtown, and then leaving the CBD and making stops every half mile or so along major avenues in the outer boroughs? |
