We need an archeologist! If we can prove that the Vikings lived in certain locations in North America, we ought to potentially be able to prove that 76th Street was built (if true). :) It looks like on the one hand we have a well-defined story attributed by TR to two separate deceased individuals who didn't know each other. On the other hand we have surface evidence that makes the story seem somewhat unlikely, but doesn't 100% conclusively disprove the story. And there it stands. |

There is one example of an existing tunnel that is completely sealed off and unmaintained, however is unrelated to IND construction but proves there is the existence of fully sealed tunnels:Polo Grounds Shuttle between Sedgwick and Anderson. There's no way into that tunnel, not even a door and several buildings are directly on top of those tunnels. Recently, construction on the Highway above the Sedgwick station resulted in the former station site filled in with concrete. Unless there's some unknown entrance somewhere, those tunnels are completely sealed off from both ends, bringing up the question how do any structural inspections take place considering multi-story buildings are directly on top? If the Sedgwick - Anderson tunnel is completely sealed, perhaps so it what's under Pitkin. My only personal account of 76th is physically visiting the intersection of 76 St & Pitkin on bike around Fall 2020. Road repaving was taking place exposing what was under the dug-up asphalt, along with an extra Manhole cover that was previously paved over directly in the middle of the intersection. I took a very close look at this manhole cover although any pattern or wording on top had been long worn away. Completely sealed around the sides, too. Since, Pitkin has been repaved, with an attempt to pave over that extra Manhole cover again however a recent look at Gmaps appears it's poking through the pavement again (note Street View along Pitkin hasn't been updated since before road repaving however seen from along 76th does show newer asphalt at the intersection) I have no personal say or any further account of any subway infrastructure built there, just sharing my observations. |

This thread has lots of pictures of what is and has been at surface level over the years. People have made arguments as to how those surface conditions might or might not be consistent with there being a partially completed subway station underneath. |

Actually it is Target at that location. But, when they reconfigured the station they made a passageway that goes around the two tracks preventing any use of the tunnel that was supposed to go up until the LIRR tracks, so that area might have been closed off beyond the station with no need for the ventilation grates any longer. |

That makes sense, unless as has been suggested, water in the tunnel became a problem to the point at which storing trains there would be impractical. <When I become "KING" I'd have prefabricated sections of modular sections of tunnel sections similar BUT each much smaller than the East River 63rd Street tunnel, trucked in for installation. |

Regarding Flatbush Terminal, I've been told the exit at the far south end of the station beyond both bumper blocks was a later addition and originally the trackways continued for another 300ft with the space fenced off and still visible from the platforms.Would love to see photos of how this used to be setup. Wondering if the trackways continued into darkness and was actually visible from the end of the platforms beyond a chain-link fence as described to me. |

Someone posted an story from a 1938 edition of the Brooklyn Eagle, years ago. An engineering study showed a high water table, similar to the one under Utica Ave, south of Kings Highway. They said, as I recall, that it would take a lot of extra work to tunnel through Pitkin Ave, east of Grant Ave. In effect, those engineers kicked the can down the road and nobody picked it up. |

Not necessarily. The water issue may have been discovered far enough from the construction of whatever station infrastructure was built that it didn’t actually impact on the infrastructure itself so it wouldn’t need inspection. |

Withe the Liberty Ave el structure only a few blocks away from the proposed subway under Pitkin the planners may have felt that it wasn’t worth the effort to employ what was then extraordinary means to build the subway any farther east. |
