There is one example of an existing tunnel that is completely sealed off and unmaintained, however is unrelated to IND construction but proves there is the existence of fully sealed tunnels:Polo Grounds Shuttle between Sedgwick and Anderson. There's no way into that tunnel, not even a door and several buildings are directly on top of those tunnels. Recently, construction on the Highway above the Sedgwick station resulted in the former station site filled in with concrete. Unless there's some unknown entrance somewhere, those tunnels are completely sealed off from both ends, bringing up the question how do any structural inspections take place considering multi-story buildings are directly on top? If the Sedgwick - Anderson tunnel is completely sealed, perhaps so it what's under Pitkin. My only personal account of 76th is physically visiting the intersection of 76 St & Pitkin on bike around Fall 2020. Road repaving was taking place exposing what was under the dug-up asphalt, along with an extra Manhole cover that was previously paved over directly in the middle of the intersection. I took a very close look at this manhole cover although any pattern or wording on top had been long worn away. Completely sealed around the sides, too. Since, Pitkin has been repaved, with an attempt to pave over that extra Manhole cover again however a recent look at Gmaps appears it's poking through the pavement again (note Street View along Pitkin hasn't been updated since before road repaving however seen from along 76th does show newer asphalt at the intersection) I have no personal say or any further account of any subway infrastructure built there, just sharing my observations. |
