Very quietly, Metrolink has assembled a pretty decent commuter rail network.

It will get significantly better once the run through tracks are installed at Union Station. That could save 5-10 min per trip because it's a long, slow detour to travel around the station.

Reassembled, from the ashes of its predecessors that the respective governments in question disassembled. Electrified, too.

Now if only a high platform model that can clear 3Rd rails can be designed to serve LIRR shuttles and east end branches of the LIRR.

Oh, the humanity!

I rode this service yesterday and really enjoyed the trip! This was my first time riding a Stadler FLIRT and thought that it was very modern compared to most equipment in the LA area. Enjoyed lunch in downtown Redlands which has lots of bars and restaurants which I likely would never have never known existed without this rail connection.

My outbound train arriving in Downtown San Bernardino

My return train after a nice, hot ramen lunch.

Only one track in downtown Redlands so all trains arrive on "Track 1"

So any guesses for why there are two platforms and only one track?

I noticed there seems to be a BILEVEL station platform in this photo.
Would anyone know the heights of both and the height of the trains door openings at floor level?

Are these STADLER FLIRT sets the same or similar to anything else in service in the U.S. of A.?

I believe the FLIRTs are always low-boarding with a small step up from platform level, and the elevated part of the platform is to provide completely level access for wheelchairs. A similar setup which comes to mind is the MBTA Green Line.

With further research we found

Stadler FLIRT (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train; German: Flinker Leichter Intercity- und Regional-Triebzug) is a passenger multiple unit trainset made by Stadler Rail of Switzerland. The baseline design of FLIRT is an electric multiple unit articulated trainset that can come in units of two to twelve cars with two to six motorized axles. The maximum speed is 200 km/h (124 mph). ""Standard floor height is 57 cm (22+7⁄16 in), but 78 cm (30+11⁄16 in) high floors are also available for platform heights of 76 cm (29+15⁄16 in).""

The FLIRT train was originally developed for the Swiss Federal Railways and was first delivered in 2004. The trains quickly became a success and were ordered by operators[2] in Algeria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Czech Republic,[3] Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and, most recently (2018), Canada.[4] As of October 2021, more than 2500 units have been sold.[5]

Other than electric (EMU), the FLIRT is produced in diesel-electric version (DEMU), and recently also as electro-diesel (bi-mode/BMU), first ordered by the Aosta Valley region in Italy (BTR.813),[6][7][8][9] and then by Greater Anglia (British Rail Class 755),[10][11][12] Norske Tog,[13] and Wales & Borders ("tri-mode" version: diesel/overhead electric/battery).[14]

Specifications
The FLIRT is a new generation of multiple units, even though it has a striking resemblance with GTW vehicles. The trains can have two to six sections and electric variants are available for all commonly used power supply systems (AC and DC) as well as standard and broad gauge. It has Jacobs bogies shared between the individual coaches, with wide walk-through gangways. ""The floor height at the entrances can be chosen by the operator, providing level boarding at most stations."" Automatic couplers of either Schwab type (on all Swiss units) or Scharfenberg type at both ends of the train allow up to four trains to be connected.

All FLIRT variations use IGBT-based traction converters from ABB, which drive the TSA induction motors located in the two bogies at either end of the train. On the two-section trains, only one bogie is powered, while on longer versions it is possible to have a third powered bogie in the middle, found on the trains for Vy in Norway and for PKP Intercity in Poland. Each bogie usually has a continuous power rating of 1,000 kW (1,300 hp) giving a typical four-section train 2,000 kW (2,700 hp) total power output as well as maximum power output of 2,600 kW (3,500 hp) over a short time. Depending on the number of powered bogies, the length and weight, they will reach top speeds between 120 and 200 km/h (75 and 124 mph) (typically 160 km/h or 99 mph). Acceleration also varies between 0.8 and 1.2 m/s2 (2.6 and 3.9 ft/s2).

The diesel version is essentially an electric version with a diesel power module inserted, generating electricity for the electric motors. In TEXRail application, the diesel power module contains two 520 kW (697 hp) Deutz AG TCD 16.0 V8 that complies with US EPA Tier 4 emission standard.[15]

Diesel, bi-mode electro-diesel, hybrid diesel-battery, or battery versions are essentially baseline design with an additional one-third length non-passenger car inserted in the trainset – called a PowerPack car – which contains the electricity generating and storage components, such as diesel engines and batteries, that provide electricity to the train to run "off-wire". It has a gangway through the centre to allow passengers to pass between the two parts of the train.

The PE building is still there and in use. It’s been turned into loft apartments.

The pic in San Bernardino shows why we don’t have streetcars anymore. It shows how much of the PE was single tracked causing long headways. Worked great when LA was full of empty roads. Wouldn’t work well now. Buses are a huge improvement.

2 minutes in and there's a clip of the old budd cars on the old green El in Philadelphia!

Stick it to them. Get a Tesla or a Vinfast. Groups that aren't part of the system.

I saw a commercial for BP this month about how they want to be everything energy. I remember TWENTY (20!!) years ago they called themselves Beyond Petroleum and claimed to put solar panels on their states. The last I saw or heard any evidence of this was 20 years ago.

Keep running the same commericals and propaganda once a generation. puh-leeze.

They were though. Street running in LA has too many delays due to accidents on or adjacent to rail when no trains were involved. A fender bender during rush hour with an injury or car needing to be towed ends up being a disaster for riders when a bus would just drive around it.

That doesn't happen. Car crashes most of the time have the involved vehicles moved to the side of the road, even trolleys can get around.

Besides, the SB line ran elevated for a few miles after leaving the PS terminal.
