QUEENS Adams unveils funding for linear park in Queens BY ESTEFANIA HERNANDEZ QUEENS PUBLISHED 4:07 PM ET SEP. 16, 2022 Mayor Eric Adams on Friday unveiled an investment of $35 million to begin phase one of QueensWay, a new linear park planned for Queens. The funding includes $2.5 million from the City Council, a press release said. “We are moving from a city of no to a city of yes and QueensWay is the way we are going to go throughout this entire city,” Adams said at news conference in Forest Hills. “And ensure that open space, green ways, good clean environments for children and families will continue to grow in this city.” The first phase of the project will help transform a section of the abandoned railroad tracks in Forest Hills, known as the Met Hub, into a five-acre park. Once complete, the 47-acre QueensWay will provide the 2.4 million residents living in the borough with a new open space that will give them access to recreational amenities, outdoor educational programs and an alternative transportation to schools, businesses, and 10 bus lines, the release said. Also unsettled is the possibility of reviving the rail link. If the MTA decides that’s something it plans to do, the city would then be forced to change gears during the design phase, the official noted. I can’t understand what the matter is with NY. In Boston, a couple of abandoned commuter lines were converted to transit use like Riverside and Old Colony, in LA part pf the PE ROW to Long Beach was partially reconstructed for light rail, and St Louis repurposed a former RR ROW for a light rail system. NY has a couple of former RR lines suitable for rapid transit used so what’s going on? |

In Boston, a couple of abandoned commuter lines were converted to transit use like Riverside and Old Colony,The big difference between the Rockaway Beach Branch (RBB) and the extensions to Riverside and Braintree is that the Boston extensions were to and through areas that lacked rail transit. The area around the Rockaway Beach Branch already has subway service within 1/2 mile of the RBB's stations. Ditto for extending the East Boston Line to Revere Beach, over the abandoned Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn RR. The big crime is 25% of NYC residents are not within walking distance of a subway station and none of the proposed extensions is addressing their needs. |

The busiest intersections for bus traffic are downtown Jamaica and downtown Flushing. These buses primarily serve areas that are not within walking distance of a subway stop. It's a measure that many people in areas not served by the subway do take public transportation. |

NYC's technical boundaries include practical suburbs that have no interest in being anything else. The dropoff in density only a few miles outside of Manhattan is dramatic. This is why it's often pointed out that some European cities that have practically no skyscrapers are "more dense" than NYC -- because those low-density areas get counted in the figuring.In terms of desire for a subway, that goes neighborhood by neighborhood. Thinking of Northeast Queens, for example, a lot of these neighborhoods will complain if a new house goes in that's even one story higher than the rest, or stands out in any way, so I doubt they'd enjoy seeing a subway entrance pop up. I suspect there are a lot of reverse-commuting situations, too - where those using the transit to a neighborhood aren't necessarily the people living in that neighborhood. The Breezy Point Coop runs some kind of van from the Q35 stop at Roxbury into Breezy Point proper and I hear that most passengers are not residents of the area. That's not to say I don't think a subway should be built to the city limits, but I'm not opposed to, say, finishing the 2nd Ave subway, before worrying about those places that aren't yet clamoring for transit. People in Douglaston and Little Neck, for example, tend not to have the same transit needs as the city's CBDs. |
