Tuscarora Almanac – August 28, 1977 – The Book of First and Last Runs

The August 1977 Schedule Changes
The new schedule that went into effect on August 28, 1977 featured drastic service cuts to late night service reflecting the poor state of the subway system and the corresponding drop in ridership.
The following changes were made to late night service
“AA” trains would be discontinued during the midnight hours. As a consequence “A” trains would now run local in Manhattan.
“B” and “N” trains would run as shuttles in Brooklyn between 36th Street and Coney Island. “N” trains would run express on the Fourth Avenue Line between 36th Street and 59th Street at least in one direction.
The “B” train would also operate a late night shuttle between 57th Street-6th Avenue and 47th – 50th Streets. I believe that this train ran in both directions on the northbound track.
“G” trains would be cut back from Forest Hills to Queens Plaza. “F” trains would run local in Queens when this was in effect. “E” trains would continue to run express at all times.

Tuscarora Almanac - August 28, 1991 - The Book of Wrecks

A southbound No. 4 Lexington Avenue Express derails north of 14 Street - Union Square Station while switching from the express to local tracks. The crash killed five passengers and injured over two hundred. The train consisted of ten R-62’s; (s) 1440 - 1439 - 1437 - 1436 - 1435 - 1434 - 1432 - 1431 - 1433 - 1438. 1437 was cut if half by the collision and scrapped. 1435, 1436, 1439 and 1440 and were badly damaged and not returned to service.

The last pair of R-40M's, 4484-4485 ran in service today. They operated in a mixed consist with R-42's on the "V" Queens - 6th Avenue Local on August 28, 2009. The train consisted of (n) 4752-4753, 4660-4661, 4485-4484, 4720-4721 and 4763-4762.

And now, my submitted entry for this date of August 28, which I had also posted on my Facebook page and in one of its subway fan groups. It is a lengthy read, but enjoy!

This Date In NYC Transit History: Monday, August 28, 1939 (83 years ago)...

The city-owned and operated Independent Subway System (IND) had opened a new "add-in" station in Long Island City, in the borough of Queens, along its busy Queens-53rd Street tunnel route, which had been in service previously since it first opened in August 1933 with "E" 8th Avenue [Manhattan] trains operating ("F" 6th Avenue line service would be added later along there in December 1940).

Located under 44th Drive between the blocks of 21st Street and 23rd Street, the station's name was given as "23rd Street-Ely Avenue". It was planned to have that station opened with the rest of the IND route going out to Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights, but the city agency that was building this line initially had deferred it to the point that just a provisional shell at only that location was done at first, as it was believed that it would not have any such real demands of true ridership usage at that station.

Based on complaints from civic and public leaders, plus the increase use of commercial space and factories being built in that area, it was then eventually decided in September 1936 to finish and complete that one particular station. Construction was completed two years later, but its opening was still delayed on the perception that the new station would still not generate any real public usage there. How so wrong they were!

The 23rd Street-Ely Avenue station, acknowledged officially by the MTA as "Court Square-23rd Street", is currently used by the "E" and "M" trains. A free transfer is available to / from the nearby stations served by the IRT #7 elevated route located above 23rd Street, and the "G" Crosstown route through a very long passageway to / from its terminal station under Jackson Avenue.

By the way, "Ely Avenue" was the former street name of 23rd Street, as with many of the named streets and avenues in Queens were later given new numbered ones beginning as early in 1915. As a further example, 21st Street was formerly "Van Alst Avenue", and 44th Drive was "Nott Avenue".

They should have built at least a shell at 10th Ave. when the 7 extension was bores out.

IINM 1438 was mated with 1431-32-33-34 when those cars were unitized.

Yes, that was a serious omission, and because the shell was not built the station will probably never be built.

There are two shells along the deep-bore tunnel under 6 Av at both 14 St and 23 St, in case they wanted to turn those stations into local stations. The shells were easily visible from the RFW, as the round bore tunnel turns rectangular for those stretches.

Because there was no shell at 59 St (Lexington Av), in 1959 the express station platforms were carved into the deep bore tunnel.

The original tile work looks almost as good today as it did 83 years ago. In modern times they created a parallelogram-shaped storage room on each platform by installing a wall along the extra-wide section of the platforms at the 23 St end, reducing the extra-wide portion and lengthening the normal-width portion. The new tile stripe is darker but nevertheless very attractive, and they installed the "artwork" on the new diagonal walls. (At the 21 St end, the original diagonal walls are still there.)

Bloomberg vetoed any construction for a 10th Ave station shell. I never found out why.

The tilework still looks great at most IND stations in Queens.

I was supposed to be on that S/B 4 train in 1991. Instead, I took the train before that (maybe a 5 train) to meet my wait relief at Union Square instead of 125/Lex as I had somewhere to go as fast as possible! I heard the crash as I was getting into my car in the District parking area.

I believe money was the issue. We were in the middle of the Great Recession when many of these deals were being done.

Considering the date the composites were removed from service, its likely I rode them a time or two on the Polo Grounds Shuttle. However at age 5, I wouldn’t have known the difference between them and any other IRT cars I rode at the time.

That was an option in the contract but the city, who funded the extension did not want to pay for it. Bad decision indeed.

North of the 86th St station, what is the height difference between the upper and lower tunnels under Lexington Ave?

They remain one level directly below the other until they're on the same level just before 103 St. There's a construction photo taken at 97 St showing the two levels sharing a floor/roof. There's no deep bore north of 86 St, it's mostly all one double-depth cut-and-cover tunnel, not separate tunnels.
