And now, a thread on two particular R-10 cars, #3150 and #3151, showing images from their delivery in 1948, through their service lives in service, and towards the final hurrah.

Were the trains painted three times? The Broad Channel picture has them in a dark color without the headlights installed (1956). The later pictures has them back to their original colors. 1976 has them with the stripe and repainted, 1988 has them repainted again (single color).

The Broad Channel picture shows the R-10 with about seven years worth of accumulated steel dust, as the transit system did not get to have the chance in cleaning and washing the car fleet until the first actual subway car wash was installed at 207th Street in 1960.

The actual exterior paint schemes on the R-10's over the years were...
1. Two-tone grey with dual orange stripes.
2. Solid tartar red (on nine cars only in 1962)
3. Teal blue and white with center stripe motif.
4. Teal blue and white with no center stripe motif.
5. Platinum silver with dark blue stripe.
6. Dark green with silver roof (on 110 WH cars only).

Not included here is the yellow work train scheme that was briefly applied on some cars during the 1980's, such as I recall on #3087, #3092, #3315 and #3324, although a few of that group (GE cars) would be repainted back into scheme #5 as listed above.

I like to refer to 3 and 4 as the racing stripe scheme and the half-and-half scheme, respectively. I remember both.

#3324 at Rockaway Park. Was this a yellow painted work motor ?

Hey, Bill!

Yeah, that was one of them! Note how freshly painted that car #3324 really came out!

Yeah, that is #3315 at the point, and #3087 behind (and partially hidden).

I remember seeing that pair at street level near the ENY Yard entrance, when the pair was there.

Thanks for posting and sharing this and the other image (of #3324) on this forum.
