Now if the city was not so draconian when it came to regulating steam locomotion, that station and the lines feeding it could've been located at the Battery instead. Imagine how useful that would have been . . . ? (42nd Street was the mandated southern limit.) |

The location was mandated by the city. A forced transfer was created. Not to mention the handicap of forcing other railroads to stay on the wrong side of the Hudson and/or East River when they could have possibly consolidated operations in locations on the island across from where their lines were located in NJ/LI. Having the Grand Central terminus further south on the island would not have precluded the development further north of there. |

The original line up the west side of Manhattan and up the Hudson was the Hudson River Railroad. Cornelius Vanderbilt acquired it, and the original New York Central, which was an east-west line from Albany to (I think) Buffalo, and they were combined as the New York Central and Hudson River.That name survived into the early 20th century, when it became simply New York Central. |
