From what I can remember there was absolutely no through service between the WillyB and the Montague St tunnel till 1967. I came across an old Myrtle?Chambers timetable that showed a train from Met terminating at Chambers St and running light to Court St where it was supposed to enter service as a West End lcl. For whatever reason it was never scheduled to go through in service. I never saw the attached work program so I don’t know for sure if the same crew operated it on the West End or if a Southern Div crew relieved it either at Chambers or at Broad. |

It may have been a law but with certain exemptions such a limit of how much underground mileage the cars were allowed to operate. The brief underground portion into Main St, the Anderson Av Tunnel and 9 Ave Lower would probably not rise any objections, and even the short distance between Essex and Chambers would probably be OK if pushing the envelope a bit. Something like el cars on the West End or Culver through the 4 Av Subway would definitely be frowned upon. |

There was some documentation but I just cant recall where I saw it. Something alluding to the truth of that may be seen in the photos that exist of the Bluebird operating on the 4 Av Lcl. Even prior to unification, the handwriting was on the wall concerning the eventual demolition of the Fulton St el since the IND Fulton St Line was snaking its way east directly under the el. With that in mind, the BMT probably figured that with the ultimate demise of the Fulton and its replacement by the city subway, it would be best to concentrate on the lines that would most likely remain. At that point, if Fulton were gone, the only completely self contained els would be Myrtle, Lex and 5 Av and 5 Av was probably on life support at that point since it had already been rendered redundant by the BMT’s own 4 Av subway and the remaining els could not accommodate 10 ft wide cars anyhow. |

It may be but the needs of the passengers come first. Another though occurred to me. As I have mentioned, one of the things the BRT wanted to do was to build a new station on the Myrtle Av pretty much above the subway station, so its possible that was another reason for changing the station name. The name change timeframe was consistent with the PSC report I cited so the proposed transfer point could have been a factor. |
