It's a mock-up that metro posted on the Source. More photos in the link.

I think so. They're roomier, which they're going to need with the line extensions to busier areas coupled with relatively poor headways.

I am so impressed. It is apparent that passenger comfort was first and foremost in the minds of the designers...NOT! Manspreaders will appreciate the IRT=style longitudinal seats. And the opening to allow easy access to the adjoining cars will be a bonanza to the hygienically challenged. Just this afternoon I was assaulted by one seeking monetary donations on the Purple Line. They thought of everything, except ugly ad wraps over the windows, but I'm sure that will soon come.

What are the seating configurations like in the older cars?

No open-able windows (even in the older cars)? Their A/C systems always work 100% of the time?

How old are the original L.A. Metro cars to warrant replacement ?

Average age 20 years according to the article. But they aren’t being replaced. They are adding to the fleet due to the purple line extension.

Nope. Even the light rail vehicles which are mostly above ground don’t have windows that open.

I don’t know if the AC always works but I’ve never been too warm in the subway. Maybe because it’s deep underground?

The original Blue Line cars (P685) and the later ones that were originally on the Green Line and are now on the Blue line have small windows that can be opened at the top of the main window (see pic)

They require a tool to be opened, so the geese can't do it themselves. Only one time did I see one open on a car in service. I was inbound to L. A., and the lead car of a 2-car train had the pantograph down. The safety equipment (headlights, horns, doors etc) were being powered no doubt by the trainline connection from the second powered car,but auxiliaries like interior lights and the HVAC were not. I boarded at Compton, and at Imperial, a tech got on and opened all the windows using some sort of tool. IIRC, it was in the winter, and relatively early in the morning (7:30-8:00ish), so it wasn't all that hot anyway. The train was restricted to about 35 mph, since it was just the trailing car providing power. This of course caused the train to be late, as we made the turn from Washington Blvd onto Flower St, I could see the trailing train entering Grand station. I assume once we arrived at 7th St/Metro Center, they swapped out that train for the gap train that usually stayed on the tail track, but I needed to get to work, so I didn't stick around to see if that was what occurred.

The first cars (A650, fleet #501-530) which covered the first segment from Union Station to Westlake/MacArthur Park) were built in 1991-1993. Second phase (531-572) were built (I think) 1996-1999, Final phoase (573-604) were 1999-2000. I had heard that 501-530 would be retired once all the new cars were in, but I don't know if this is still the case. 531-604 will remain in service regardless.

True. I didn’t count those since they don’t open.

Small typo. You meant P865. And the ones that look the same are P2020’s which are still in service.

Looks like it's designed for a lot of standees. To that point, the yellow lines are pointless.
