[PHOTOS] Walking The Rockaway Beach Branch
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Oct 13 15:42:59 2019 I couldn't resist, with ongoing RBB thread. There were early photos at three locations, but I walked the line in April of 1989. I entered the RBB near White pot Jct. Here's the dangerous Yellowstone Blvd bridge. (April 1989) This should be Metropolitan Ave. (April 1984) Vandals burned down the wooden bridge spanning the lower Montauk Div. (April 1989) Trackside by the lower Montauk. (April 1989) This should be Union Tpke down below. The RBB is on the left. Is this where the RBB connected to the lower Montauk div ? (April 1989) Washout ! (april 1989) Forest View Crescent apartments. (September 1981) Spanning the RBB was at that time the Interboro Pkwy, now the Jackie Robinson Pkwy. (April 1989) Not sure if this is the Myrtle Ave bridge. Anyone know ? (April 1989) Roughly the same area before abandonment. Notice disused track on right showing single track operation. (Undated Photo) Unknown location along the RBB. (April 1989) At Park Lane South, I saw where a switch for a freight siding once was. (April 1989) Better view of where switch once was. This siding had third rail at one time.(April 1989) Bumping block of the freight siding. (April 1989) At Brooklyn Manor, the BMT Jamaica Line crosses overhead. He was of course from some other "Toonerville Trolley” transit system and obviously not familiar with the flexibility that the number of tracks in NY provides.

No such thing as 'too much practice' during training. In addition, trainsets used for school car don't plug the road lol, there are enough revenue and nonrevenue trains to cause delays in service.

I think the ninth photo shows the Forest Park Drive overpass (now closed to auto traffic) looking south. The next photo (with the train) shows Myrtle Av followed by Forest Park Drive overpasses also looking south. The factory smokestack in that photo belongs to the old Frank Medico smoking pipe factory on 101 St, now converted to apartments. You can also see the factory in the 14th photo looking north.

The stop arms are still upraised also. Yes, the up position is the default position, but electricity is still being used for signals on unused tracks. And the MTA is always out of money ?

I did and when I returned to my car, I followed the ROW via Woodhaven Blvd and took an odometer reading. I walked approximately 4.6 miles round trip. The reading could be off. Can`t help thinking, What a waste, including the portion on the current IND, where they have NOT maintained the center trackage. It would be a bigger waste transforming this valuable ROW into a "High Line" continuous park. I'm afraid that might happen. I hope not. Bill Newkirk

Hopefully one of the next trips to New York, I'd like to check it out more closely. When you do, remember the following: 1) Best time of the year is when there's no leaves on the trees. It's probably a dense jungle since I took those pics. 2) Announce your intentions to walk the RBB and see if any SubChatters would join you. Safety in numbers ! 3) Wear old clothing and good foot wear. Since the bridge over the lower Montauk division was burned down long ago, you'll have to make your way down the embankment to cross the tracks. 4) Make sure you camera batteries are charged up or have spares. Thanks for sharing! My contribution is shown here. It is a ghostly view of the north end of the RRB Woodhaven station seen from my back window when I lived at 91-41-98th St in the early 80s. The locals that live there miss the service big time. It was the fastest way to get to Manhattan from that area. The Green bus was such a schlepp & the once open Woodhaven LIRR sta on the Atlantic Ave branch left you off in downtown Brooklyn. Then trek for a subway. They said that the last fare charged from there to Penn was 50 cents one way. Those were the days indeed!

I wish they had kept that up, perhaps de-electrified, and run a 2-car diesel job from Hunterspoint all these years just to keep the right-of-way intact and not encroached.

They bought it from the LIRR about 14 years before there was an MTA, even though LIRR trains continued to run on it.

I see they would not run their precious post war equipment on that train. I believe it regularly departed form NYPS directly opposite the Broadway Ltd. So there you had side by side the PRR's signature train alongside the LIRR most lowly train.
