You are playing armchair civil engineer. What the PRR did 110 years ago is now irrelevant. If life were as simple as you say, they would do it.

I have not been following this project as closely as I have followed others. That being said, what other options for the under river alignment were proposed and later rejected?

I just oppose the feds supporting a hugely expensive project whose benefits would be limited to a small region.

A lot more people use the Hudson River tunnels than use the hugely expensive I-70 across Colorado and Utah.

I'm not opposed to I-70 having been built. But I am opposed to changing the rules in mid-stream.

Correct. Uncle Sam spent appx 20 billion to rebuild sewers in Afghanistan. Now the region needs Federal $$$ for a new Hudson River Rail tunnel & Trump & Co tells the region to suck wind. Something very wrong with that picture. Where the hell is our priorities?

The 8 Northeast Corridor states + DC are 25% of the GDP. Amtrak is 2/3rds of the air/rail travel market for the southern half of the corridor, and NJT has 9 times as many passengers going through there. GDP suffers when people can't go to work, and there are plenty of non-commuters and non-local residents on trains too.

We can shut down auto traffic through the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels and there would be less of an impact than shutting down any of the 3 pairs of rail crossings.

But you simple regard trains as a ride service for those specific individuals , with no regard to economic impact because highways are for "everyone". That mentality is normal for someone in Kentucky, but not here.

Andy's free college idea is funny money though (since it's only for SUNY), and actually smart. The state funds SUNY either way. All this does is route the same funds they'd have given the schools directly, through students. The stroke of genius behind it is that it only takes the difference between the federal aid and the sticker price. So, a hypothetical student gets federal funding which amounts to 50% of the SUNY tuition. He decides to go to SUNY because it's "free". That federal funding is now captured via the student. With this, NY gives itself 50% of one student's tuition, and snags the other 50% from the feds, money it would not have gotten otherwise.

No need to. Most people, excepting you of course, are intelligent enough to decipher liberal from commie.

It's the Republicans that gave us the socialistic interstate highway system that put the private passenger train and half the freight system out of business. Now too deadbeat to raise the gas tax, for 25 years they have transferred $110 Billion in general funds to the highway trust fund since 2008, while they whine about Medicare, Obamacare, and Medicaid.

It was due to "right wingers" that the USA ended up with the biggest and most comprehensive privately-owned railroad system on the planet. Ever since Woodrow Wilson (Mr. USRA), the left has actively attacked it via taxation, regulation and "competition" by government-owned roads and airports.

Right, throw away several billion dollars to save on the cost of a couple of $250,000 each temporary construction access bridges.

WMATA built the Red line tunnels west of Rock Creek Park using a temporary construction access bridge. they also built a test track with

You keep saying this, but it is not as true as you think it is.

Example : Farm Subsidies... Keeps farmers in house and home. It also GIVES YOU cheep prices in the Supermarket.

We do not really need the subsidy, we will tighten our belts and get by with what we have. But will will grow far less food, and what goes to market will be far more expensive, so... You will pay exactly the same in the end.

Or take I-94 (please), sure we use it and we can drive 75 mph on it, but old highway 10 was just as good, and so it takes two hours to drive somewhere instead of one hour, the difference is not all that much anyway. When you ask "How far is Bismarck from here?" We will answer in hours not miles.

Oh well, why do you suppose we elect republicans to the state house and democrats to congress.

Gotta be something valid to your claim.

Sorry I haven't been following this L-O-N-G discussion but my take is this, which somebody may have already said:

I say Trump is trying to screw over Schumer. Republican Peter King from LI feels the same way too.

Pretty sad, but Trump probably never rode a train in his life. We may have to wait till after the 2020 election, after Trump gets voted out, to get the federal funds. In the meantime, the tunnel will get more deteriorated to the point of single tracking 24/7 with only Amtrak allowed thru there with all NJT trains terminating at either Newark or Hoboken.
