That and the trade war, vindictive, insane behavior from a madman with dangerous consequences. If his stupid cabinet had any brains, they'd invoke the 25th amendment and get him out of there now. But when the robot DOT Secretary sleeps with the dope of a Senate majority leader from Kentucky, forget about it. |

The schema being proposed is an overly expensive and complicated solution to a simple problem. The simple solution is to add the 3rd and 4th tracks on either side of the existing 2 tracks from Newark Penn to Bergan Hill and bore the 2 new tunnels, one upstream and one downstream, next to the 2 existing tunnels and modify A interlocking in New York Penn to accommodate access to the new Penn South terminal. All 4 track would be available to both Amtrak and New Jersey Transit and would allow the restoration and upgrading of the existing North River tunnels. They are following the ARC path into Penn Station, or we'd have to go through another DEIS. That saved money and many years. If you put a tube on either side, the Empire tunnel and LIRR access to WSY are in the way. So they had to come up on the south side. The NYPS interlocking will be modified to serve NYPS-South. Any tunnel tube will access existing Penn Station and South and either railroad can use them, though Amtrak will not want to go to NYPS-South. |

NJ should pay the lion's share. NY and the feds should help. This is not a project of national importance, but of regional. Amtrak has plenty of capacity with two Hudson River tubes, it's New Jersey commuters who need this built. |

Amtrak's share is still 2/3rds of the air/rail travel market for the southern half of the NEC.I agree NJ should pay more than NY, but the Federal govt should be 50%. Most highway projects are not of national importance either, yet get federal money. |

Highways can be used by anyone with a car (most Americans). I may be a railfan, but I'm a realist. Highways ARE a national interest. Passenger rail is not. That being said, there's nothing wrong with passenger rail, or Amtrak. I just oppose the feds supporting a hugely expensive project whose benefits would be limited to a small region. |

The federal government should pay the smallest percentage, not half. As I stated elsewhere, highways are far more important to far more people than Amtrak will ever be, and this expansion project benefits almost one group exclusively, the residents of northern New Jersey. |

Do you know that for a fact ?Why do you think the commercial enterprise know as the Pennsylvania Railroad chose the existing alignment? Answer, because it was the cheapest and simplest to exacute based on the technology of that era. And what about a new DEIS that I told you about that will put this off even more years ? If it were practical for a straight alignment, they'd have done it. The environmental impact statement costs are peanuts compared to construction costs.
