R-10 #3184 is alive!!!Oh, I will be on the trip now, since that car will be running as I just purchased a ticket online (I am a member with the TM). Second...#3189 is still outside the barn at 207th Street Yard, coupled to the SBK Locomotive, R-1 #103 and IRT WFLV #5655. and as of Friday 7/21/2017. -William A. Padron {"3174"] |

On the older SMEEs, it was called the variable load valve and all cars up to the R-32s had them. Starting with the R-38s, which had the upgraded version of the SMEE called by WABCO RT-2, the cars had a load sensor which no longer emitted the puff of air when the doors closed. |

How hard would it be to install authentic-looking end-car scroll signs? The colored bullets and Helvetica mixed-case signs are all wrong for these cars. And can we wish for the rattan seats (or the red leatherette replacements), rather than the incredibly uncomfortable and inauthentic plastic ones? |

Be thankful that are at least running. It's short notice to make those kind of changes with the nostalgia trip only a week away.Repainting the car isn't much of a chore, but replicating those velon covered seats would be time consuming and costly. The bullet and lower-case roll signs were installed during the final GOH the R-10 cars got in the mid-80s, and they spent half their careers with the plastic seats. It might not be "as delivered" but these items do represent their appearance as it was during a revenue service portion of their careers. |

I remember when they painted the car, they took out the NYAB RSU compressor and replaced it with a spare A-3/2-CY compressor unit off an R22. It will be slightly different with the sounds. The original R-10 compressor motors sat lower on the cradle and slower rpms, making r10s-r15s sound different from r16s-r36s, which were faster motors and sat at level on the cradle, with the compressor pump. |

A real restoration would entail repainting, original curtain roll signs etc. That could happen, but first things first. Let's see how she runs MU with the other SMEE's and is truly road worthy. They may have been dogs to some of those who operated them, but for us buffs, they ruled the Abbott with an iron fist and provided many a joyride up CPW. The best decision made by far by the BoT was assigning them to the Abbott. They were tailor-made for that line. |

I can’t say for certain, but I would suspect that the popularity at the time of the Billy Strayhorn/Duke Ellington tune “Take the A Train” popularized the line to the point that the B of T felt that it was the showcase line of the NYCTS or at least the IND so it was the best place to assign its newest cars. As far as the opinions of those who operated them, I thought they were the best SMEEs around until the R-32s came along although neither were as much fun to operate as the various prewar equipment like the R-9s. |

Even though the Transit Museum had selected R-10 car #2959 for their collection, and which eventually went to the scrap line, no one made the real push or effort (make that no loud noise) in convincing MTA NYCT to set aside any amount of R-10's for a museum train. During the Kiley-Gunn administration, the agency was not interesting in preserving and/or maintain any or more retired cars into the TM's collection.Lots of lament came much later after the fact. It even did not help matters that even most of the remaining R-10's, including those graffitied and of the non-GOH units, were being sent in a hell bent way down to Cross Harbor in Brooklyn, then out via car float to New Jersey, and for its final disposal with their car bodies ready for scrap. In other words, there was just no real voice to save any more R-10's, and thus no campaign to get a museum train. Thus, they were doomed for their ultimate end. And so it goes... -William A. Padron ["R-10's running: 1948-1989"] |
